Exercise 9.11 - A channel that replaces its input by a fixed state with probability pp is strictly contractive and has exactly one fixed point

A partly resetting channel has one fixed point.

The Exercise

A channel ℰ\mathcal{E} acts on a quantum system SS in one of two ways. With probability pp it discards the input and prepares the system in a fixed state ρ0\rho_0; with probability 1−p1-p it applies another channel ℰ′\mathcal{E}'. An input state τ\tau therefore leaves as ℰ(τ)=pρ0+(1−p)ℰ′(τ),0<p≤1.\mathcal{E}(\tau) = p\,\rho_0 + (1-p)\,\mathcal{E}'(\tau), \qquad 0 < p \le 1.(1) The exercise asks to show that ℰ\mathcal{E} is strictly contractive in the trace distance, and that it has exactly one fixed point, a state it leaves unchanged.

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦

For a weight pp with 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1, the mixture of two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is the state pρ+(1−p)σ.p\,\rho + (1-p)\,\sigma .(2)✦ The output (1) is the mixture of ρ0\rho_0 and ℰ′(τ)\mathcal{E}'(\tau) with weight pp.

A quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on SS is a map from the states of SS to the states of SS that agrees on states with a completely positive, trace preserving linear map Φ\Phi on the operators on the state space of SS: ℰ(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ,tr⁡Φ(A)=tr⁡Afor every operator A.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \quad \text{for every state } \rho, \qquad \operatorname{tr} \Phi(A) = \operatorname{tr} A \quad \text{for every operator } A.(3)✦

Distance Between States

The trace distance between two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is half the trace norm of their difference, D(ρ,σ)=12tr⁡|ρ−σ|.D(\rho,\sigma) = \tfrac{1}{2} \operatorname{tr} \lvert \rho - \sigma \rvert .(4)✦

A map ℰ\mathcal{E} on the states of SS is strictly contractive when, for any two distinct states, the trace distance between their images is strictly smaller than the trace distance between them.✦

The Claim

The library states the two parts of the exercise as two theorems.

Theorem 1. Let SS be a quantum system, ρ0\rho_0 a state of SS, pp a real number with 0<p≤10 < p \le 1 and ℰ′\mathcal{E}' a channel on SS, and let ℰ\mathcal{E} be the map on the states of SS given by (1). Then ℰ\mathcal{E} is strictly contractive: for any two distinct states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS, D(ℰ(ρ),ℰ(σ))<D(ρ,σ).D\bigl(\mathcal{E}(\rho), \mathcal{E}(\sigma)\bigr) < D(\rho, \sigma).(5)✦

Theorem 2. Let SS, ρ0\rho_0 and pp be as before, and let ℰ\mathcal{E} and ℰ′\mathcal{E}' be channels on SS related by (1) for every state τ\tau. Then ℰ\mathcal{E} has exactly one fixed point: there is one and only one state ρ\rho of SS with ℰ(ρ)=ρ.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \rho .(6)✦

What Is Checked

Both theorems are stated over a quantum system SS and its states, the channels ℰ\mathcal{E} and ℰ′\mathcal{E}', the mixture (2) of two states, and the trace distance (4), in which strict contractivity is measured.

The library proves that the mixture (2) of two states is again a state, so that (1) gives a state for every input τ\tau.
