Exercise 9.12 - The trace distance between two depolarized qubit states, and strict contraction

Depolarizing noise brings qubit states closer together.

The Exercise

A qubit is sent through a depolarizing channel with parameter pp, 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1: with probability pp its state is replaced by the maximally mixed state, and with probability 1−p1-p it passes unchanged. Two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of the qubit, with Bloch vectors r→\vec r and s→\vec s, are sent in. The exercise asks for the trace distance between the two output states, worked out from the Bloch vectors, and for a proof that when p>0p > 0 the channel brings any two distinct states strictly closer together.

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The qudit with dd levels is the system whose state space is ℂd\mathbb{C}^d with its standard inner product.✦ The qubit is the qudit with two levels, the system with state space ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2.✦

A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦ The maximally mixed state of a system SS with a nonzero state space of dimension dd is the state of SS whose operator is I/dI/d, with II the identity.✦

Bloch Vectors

The Pauli matrices are the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices X=(0110),Y=(0−ii0),Z=(100−1).X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(1) The Pauli vector is σ→=(X,Y,Z)\vec\sigma = (X, Y, Z); for a real vector n→=(n1,n2,n3)\vec n = (n_1, n_2, n_3), the matrix n→⋅σ→=n1X+n2Y+n3Z\vec n \cdot \vec\sigma = n_1 X + n_2 Y + n_3 Z.

The Bloch matrix of a real vector r→\vec r is 12(I+r→⋅σ→)\tfrac12(I + \vec r \cdot \vec\sigma). For r→\vec r of length |r→|=r12+r22+r32≤1|\vec r| = \sqrt{r_1^2 + r_2^2 + r_3^2} \le 1, the Bloch state ρr→\rho_{\vec r} of r→\vec r is the state of the qubit whose operator on ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 is this matrix: ρr→=12(I+r→⋅σ→).\rho_{\vec r} = \tfrac12 \left( I + \vec r \cdot \vec\sigma \right).(2)✦

Trace Distance

The trace distance between two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is D(ρ,σ)=12tr⁡|ρ−σ|,D(\rho, \sigma) = \tfrac12 \operatorname{tr} |\rho - \sigma|,(3)✦ Here the trace norm is the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues.

A map ff on the states of SS is strictly contractive when it strictly decreases the trace distance between any two distinct states.✦

The Depolarizing Channel

For a qudit with d≥1d \ge 1 levels and a probability pp with 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1, the depolarizing channel is the map on the states of the qudit that sends each state to its mixture with the maximally mixed state, ρ\rho with weight 1−p1-p and I/dI/d with weight pp.✦ The depolarizing channel ℰ\mathcal{E} of the qubit is the case d=2d = 2: ℰ(ρ)=(1−p)ρ+pI2.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = (1-p)\,\rho + p\,\frac{I}{2}.(4)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1, and let r→\vec r and s→\vec s be real vectors of length at most one. The depolarizing channel takes the Bloch states ρr→\rho_{\vec r} and ρs→\rho_{\vec s} to states at trace distance D(ℰ(ρr→),ℰ(ρs→))=(1−p)|r→−s→|2.D\bigl(\mathcal{E}(\rho_{\vec r}), \mathcal{E}(\rho_{\vec s})\bigr) = (1-p)\,\frac{|\vec r - \vec s|}{2}.(5)✦

Theorem 2. Let 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1. For any two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of the qubit, D(ℰ(ρ),ℰ(σ))=(1−p)D(ρ,σ).D\bigl(\mathcal{E}(\rho), \mathcal{E}(\sigma)\bigr) = (1-p)\, D(\rho, \sigma).(6)✦

Theorem 3. Let 0<p≤10 < p \le 1. The depolarizing channel is strictly contractive: for any two distinct states ρ≠σ\rho \neq \sigma of the qubit, D(ℰ(ρ),ℰ(σ))<D(ρ,σ).D\bigl(\mathcal{E}(\rho), \mathcal{E}(\sigma)\bigr) < D(\rho, \sigma).(7)✦

What Is Checked

The three claims are stated over the depolarizing channel (4) on the states of the qubit and the trace distance (3); the first is stated for the Bloch states (2), and the third over the definition of a strictly contractive map.

The library proves that each of these constructions yields a state. The Bloch matrix of r→\vec r is positive exactly when |r→|≤1|\vec r| \le 1, and its trace is one, so ρr→\rho_{\vec r} is a state of the qubit. The operator I/dI/d is positive with unit trace, and the state space ℂd\mathbb{C}^d of a qudit with d≥1d \ge 1 levels contains a nonzero vector✦, so the qudit has a maximally mixed state. The output of the depolarizing channel is a convex combination of two states and therefore again a state.
