Exercise 9.10 - A channel that brings any two states closer leaves exactly one state unchanged

A strictly contractive channel has exactly one fixed state.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Let ℰ\mathcal{E} be a quantum channel on a system that brings any two different states strictly closer in trace distance, so that its two outputs are always harder to tell apart than the two inputs. Show that ℰ\mathcal{E} has a unique fixed point: exactly one state that the channel leaves unchanged.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical object whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦

The trace distance D(ρ,σ)D(\rho,\sigma) between two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is half the trace norm of their difference, with λi\lambda_i the eigenvalues of ρ−σ\rho - \sigma: D(ρ,σ)=12tr⁡|ρ−σ|=12∑i|λi|.D(\rho,\sigma) = \tfrac{1}{2}\operatorname{tr}\lvert\rho-\sigma\rvert = \tfrac{1}{2}\sum_i \lvert\lambda_i\rvert .(1)✦

Strictly Contractive Channels

A quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on SS is a map on the states of SS given by a completely positive, trace preserving linear map Φ\Phi on the operators on the state space of SS: ℰ(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ,tr⁡Φ(A)=tr⁡Afor every operator A.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \ \text{for every state } \rho, \qquad \operatorname{tr}\Phi(A) = \operatorname{tr}A \ \text{for every operator } A .(2)✦

A map ℰ\mathcal{E} on the states of SS is strictly contractive when, for any two different states, the trace distance between their images is smaller than the distance between them: D(ℰ(ρ),ℰ(σ))<D(ρ,σ)for all states ρ≠σ of S.D\bigl(\mathcal{E}(\rho),\mathcal{E}(\sigma)\bigr) < D(\rho,\sigma) \quad \text{for all states } \rho \neq \sigma \text{ of } S .(3)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let SS be a quantum system with at least one state, and let ℰ\mathcal{E} be a quantum channel on SS that is strictly contractive. Then ℰ\mathcal{E} has a unique fixed point: there is exactly one state ρ\rho of SS with ℰ(ρ)=ρ.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \rho .(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the states of SS with the trace distance (1) between them, and over a map ℰ\mathcal{E} on those states that is a channel in the sense of (2) and strictly contractive in the sense of (3).
