The Exercise
Let be a state of a quantum system . A purification of is a pure state of a composite system whose reduced state on is ; the second system is the reference system. An observer who holds alone sees only , and cannot tell two purifications of on the same reference system apart. The exercise is to show that any two such purifications differ by a unitary acting on alone, with left untouched.✦
A Quantum System
A quantum system is described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two systems and is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of and .✦
A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of , .✦ A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of .✦ A pure state gives the state of , the projector onto .✦
The reduced state of a state of is the state of obtained by tracing out in an orthonormal basis of the state space of , (1)✦ where is the identity.
Unitary Evolution
A unitary of a quantum system is an evolution of as a closed system: an operator on the state space of with (2)✦ Applied to a pure state of , a unitary of gives the pure state .✦ The identity evolution of is the unitary of whose operator is the identity .✦
For a unitary of and a unitary of , the product unitary is the unitary of whose operator is the tensor product of the two operators, acting on product vectors as . With the identity evolution of in the first place, is the evolution of in which acts on and nothing acts on .
The Claim
Two pure states of purify one and the same state of exactly when their reduced states on are equal.
Theorem 1. Let and be quantum systems, and let and be pure states of with the same reduced state on , (3) Then there is a unitary of such that (4)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the composite system and its pure states, the reduced state (1) of the projector , and the product unitary of the identity evolution of with a unitary of , applied to .
About these constructions the library shows that the projector onto a unit vector is a state, and that so is the reduced state of a state; both sides of (3) are therefore states of . It shows as well that a unitary preserves norms and that the tensor product of two unitaries is unitary, so that is again a pure state of .
