The Exercise

A system AA is prepared in one of nn pure states |ψ1⟩,…,|ψn⟩|\psi_1\rangle, \dots, |\psi_n\rangle, the state |ψi⟩|\psi_i\rangle with probability pip_i, and ρ\rho is the density operator of this mixture. A second system RR, the reference, has dimension nn and an orthonormal basis |1⟩,…,|n⟩|1\rangle, \dots, |n\rangle. Pair each |ψi⟩|\psi_i\rangle with |i⟩|i\rangle, weight the pair by pi\sqrt{p_i} and add: the sum |AR⟩|AR\rangle is a pure state of AA and RR together.

The first part of the exercise is that tracing RR out of |AR⟩|AR\rangle gives back ρ\rho, so that |AR⟩|AR\rangle is a purification of ρ\rho.✦ The second is that measuring RR in the basis |i⟩|i\rangle gives outcome ii with probability pip_i and leaves AA in the state |ψi⟩|\psi_i\rangle. The third is that any pure state of AA and RR whose reduced state on AA is ρ\rho does the same, once the basis of RR is chosen to suit it.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space ℋS\mathcal{H}_S is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state σ\sigma of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS is a unit vector of ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, and it determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| of SS, the projector onto that vector.

The composite system S⊗TS \otimes T of two systems SS and TT is the system whose state space is ℋS⊗ℋT\mathcal{H}_S \otimes \mathcal{H}_T.✦ The reduced state of a state σ\sigma of S⊗TS \otimes T is the state TrTσ\mathrm{Tr}_T\,\sigma of SS given by the partial trace over TT, taken in an orthonormal basis |k⟩|k\rangle of ℋT\mathcal{H}_T: TrTσ=∑k(IS⊗⟨k|)σ(IS⊗|k⟩).\mathrm{Tr}_T\,\sigma = \sum_k \big(I_S \otimes \langle k|\big)\,\sigma\,\big(I_S \otimes |k\rangle\big).(1)✦

An Ensemble and Its Purification

An ensemble {pi,|ψi⟩}\{p_i, |\psi_i\rangle\} of pure states of a system AA consists of nn pure states |ψ1⟩,…,|ψn⟩|\psi_1\rangle, \dots, |\psi_n\rangle of AA and weights p1,…,pnp_1, \dots, p_n that form a probability distribution: every pip_i is nonnegative and ∑ipi=1\sum_i p_i = 1.✦ The density operator of the ensemble is the state of AA ρ=∑i=1npi|ψi⟩⟨ψi|.\rho = \sum_{i=1}^n p_i\, |\psi_i\rangle\langle\psi_i|.(2)✦

The reference system RR of the ensemble is the quantum system whose state space is ℂn\mathbb{C}^n itself, with its standard basis |1⟩,…,|n⟩|1\rangle, \dots, |n\rangle.✦ The purification vector of the ensemble is the vector of ℋA⊗ℂn\mathcal{H}_A \otimes \mathbb{C}^n ∑i=1npi|ψi⟩⊗|i⟩.\sum_{i=1}^n \sqrt{p_i}\; |\psi_i\rangle \otimes |i\rangle.(3)✦ The purification |AR⟩|AR\rangle of the ensemble is the pure state of A⊗RA \otimes R whose vector is (3), a vector of unit norm: ⟨AR|AR⟩=∑i,jpipj⟨ψi|ψj⟩⟨i|j⟩=∑ipi=1.\langle AR|AR\rangle = \sum_{i,j} \sqrt{p_i p_j}\,\langle\psi_i|\psi_j\rangle\langle i|j\rangle = \sum_i p_i = 1.(4)✦

Measurements

A measurement on a system SS with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators MiM_i on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, one for each outcome ii, satisfying the completeness relation ∑iMi†Mi=I\sum_i M_i^\dagger M_i = I.✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of the measurement has the effects Ei=Mi†MiE_i = M_i^\dagger M_i, positive operators that sum to II.✦ Performed on a state σ\sigma of SS, the measurement gives outcome ii with the probability p(i)p(i) that its POVM assigns, and when p(i)≠0p(i) \neq 0 the state after outcome ii is σi\sigma_i: p(i)=Tr(Eiσ),σi=MiσMi†p(i).p(i) = \mathrm{Tr}(E_i\,\sigma), \qquad \sigma_i = \frac{M_i\,\sigma\,M_i^\dagger}{p(i)}.(5)

The projective measurement in an orthonormal basis {|bi⟩}\{|b_i\rangle\} of ℋS\mathcal{H}_S is the measurement with operators Mi=|bi⟩⟨bi|M_i = |b_i\rangle\langle b_i|.✦ For a measurement on TT with operators MiM_i and a further system SS, the measurement on the second factor of S⊗TS \otimes T is the measurement with the same outcomes and operators IS⊗MiI_S \otimes M_i.✦ The reference measurement of an ensemble is the projective measurement of RR in its standard basis, made on the second factor of A⊗RA \otimes R: Mi=IA⊗|i⟩⟨i|,i=1,…,n.M_i = I_A \otimes |i\rangle\langle i|, \qquad i = 1, \dots, n.(6)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let {pi,|ψi⟩}\{p_i, |\psi_i\rangle\} be an ensemble of pure states of a system AA, with density operator ρ\rho and purification |AR⟩|AR\rangle. Then TrR|AR⟩⟨AR|=ρ.\mathrm{Tr}_R\, |AR\rangle\langle AR| = \rho.(7)✦

Theorem 2. Let {pi,|ψi⟩}\{p_i, |\psi_i\rangle\} be an ensemble of pure states of a system AA with purification |AR⟩|AR\rangle, and perform its reference measurement on |AR⟩|AR\rangle. For every outcome ii, p(i)=Tr[(IA⊗|i⟩⟨i|)|AR⟩⟨AR|]=pi,p(i) = \mathrm{Tr}\big[(I_A \otimes |i\rangle\langle i|)\,|AR\rangle\langle AR|\big] = p_i,(8)✦ and if p(i)≠0p(i) \neq 0, the state σi\sigma_i of A⊗RA \otimes R after outcome ii satisfies TrRσi=|ψi⟩⟨ψi|.\mathrm{Tr}_R\, \sigma_i = |\psi_i\rangle\langle\psi_i|.(9)✦

Theorem 3. Let {pi,|ψi⟩}\{p_i, |\psi_i\rangle\} be an ensemble of nn pure states of a system AA with density operator ρ\rho and reference system RR, and let |ϕ⟩|\phi\rangle be a pure state of A⊗RA \otimes R whose reduced state on AA is ρ\rho. Then there is an orthonormal basis |b1⟩,…,|bn⟩|b_1\rangle, \dots, |b_n\rangle of ℂn\mathbb{C}^n such that the projective measurement of RR in this basis, performed on |ϕ⟩|\phi\rangle, gives for every outcome ii p(i)=Tr[(IA⊗|bi⟩⟨bi|)|ϕ⟩⟨ϕ|]=piand, if p(i)≠0,TrRσi=|ψi⟩⟨ψi|,p(i) = \mathrm{Tr}\big[(I_A \otimes |b_i\rangle\langle b_i|)\,|\phi\rangle\langle\phi|\big] = p_i \quad\text{and, if } p(i) \neq 0, \quad \mathrm{Tr}_R\, \sigma_i = |\psi_i\rangle\langle\psi_i|,(10)✦ with σi\sigma_i the state of A⊗RA \otimes R after outcome ii.

What Is Checked

The theorems are stated over the density operator (2) of an ensemble, its purification (4) and its reference measurement (6), the reduced state (1), and the probability of an outcome and the state after it (5). The third theorem ranges besides over every pure state of A⊗RA \otimes R that purifies ρ\rho and over the projective measurements of RR in the orthonormal bases of ℂn\mathbb{C}^n. The density operator (2) of an ensemble is a state of AA, and the purification vector (3) has unit norm, so that |AR⟩|AR\rangle is a pure state of A⊗RA \otimes R. The reduced state (1) of a state of A⊗RA \otimes R is a state of AA, and the state after an outcome of nonzero probability in (5) is again a state.
