Exercise 2.80 - Two pure states of a composite system with the same Schmidt coefficients are related by a unitary on each part

Pure states with equal Schmidt coefficients differ by local unitaries.

The Exercise

Two systems AA and BB are prepared in a joint pure state, either |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle or |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle, and the two states have identical Schmidt coefficients. The exercise is to show that a unitary acting on AA alone, together with a unitary acting on BB alone, turns |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle into |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle.

Systems and Pure States

A quantum system AA is a physical system with a state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system A⊗BA \otimes B of two quantum systems AA and BB is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of AA and BB.✦

A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of a system AA is a vector of unit norm in the state space of AA, ⟨ψ|ψ⟩=1\langle \psi | \psi \rangle = 1.✦

Schmidt Coefficients

Two pure states |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle and |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle of a composite system A⊗BA \otimes B have the same Schmidt coefficients when they have Schmidt decompositions with the same coefficients: there are positive real numbers λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n, orthonormal vectors |a1⟩,…,|an⟩|a_1\rangle, \dots, |a_n\rangle and |a1′⟩,…,|an′⟩|a'_1\rangle, \dots, |a'_n\rangle in the state space of AA, and orthonormal vectors |b1⟩,…,|bn⟩|b_1\rangle, \dots, |b_n\rangle and |b1′⟩,…,|bn′⟩|b'_1\rangle, \dots, |b'_n\rangle in the state space of BB, such that |ψ⟩=∑i=1nλi|ai⟩|bi⟩,|φ⟩=∑i=1nλi|ai′⟩|bi′⟩.|\psi\rangle = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \lambda_i \, |a_i\rangle |b_i\rangle , \qquad |\varphi\rangle = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \lambda_i \, |a'_i\rangle |b'_i\rangle .(1)✦

Local Unitaries

A unitary UU of a system AA is an operator on the state space of AA with II the identity operator on that space, such that U†U=UU†=I,U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = I ,(2)✦ the evolution of AA as a closed system. Such a unitary takes a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of AA to the pure state U|ψ⟩U|\psi\rangle.✦

For a unitary UU of AA and a unitary VV of BB, the product unitary U⊗VU \otimes V is the unitary of the composite system A⊗BA \otimes B whose operator is the tensor product of the two, acting on a vector |a⟩|a\rangle of the state space of AA and a vector |b⟩|b\rangle of the state space of BB as (U⊗V)|a⟩|b⟩=U|a⟩V|b⟩.(U \otimes V)\, |a\rangle |b\rangle = U|a\rangle \, V|b\rangle .(3)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle and |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle be pure states of a composite system A⊗BA \otimes B with the same Schmidt coefficients. Then there are a unitary UU of AA and a unitary VV of BB such that |ψ⟩=(U⊗V)|φ⟩.|\psi\rangle = (U \otimes V)\, |\varphi\rangle .(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over pure states of the composite system A⊗BA \otimes B, the condition (1) of equal Schmidt coefficients, and the product unitary U⊗VU \otimes V of (3) applied to the pure state |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle.

The library proves of these constructions that the tensor product of two operators obeying (2) obeys it again on the state space of A⊗BA \otimes B, and that a unitary preserves norms.
