Exercise 2.79 - The Schmidt coefficients and vectors of a Bell state, a product state and a third, entangled state

Three states of two qubits in Schmidt form.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Three pure states of two qubits are given: the Bell state |Φ+⟩|\Phi^+\rangle, the product state |+⟩|+⟩|+\rangle|+\rangle, and (|00⟩+|01⟩+|10⟩)/3(|00\rangle + |01\rangle + |10\rangle)/\sqrt{3}. For each, the exercise asks for its Schmidt coefficients and for orthonormal vectors of the two qubits that write it as a sum of products, one product for each coefficient.

Two Qubits

A quantum system SS is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS is a unit vector in the state space of SS.✦ The composite system S⊗TS \otimes T of two quantum systems SS and TT is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of SS and TT.✦

The qubit is the quantum system whose state space is ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2.✦ The computational basis states |0⟩|0\rangle and |1⟩|1\rangle of the qubit are the pure states whose vectors are the two standard basis vectors of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2, and for two qubits |jk⟩|jk\rangle stands for |j⟩⊗|k⟩|j\rangle \otimes |k\rangle.✦ The state |+⟩|+\rangle of the qubit, the eigenvector of the Pauli operator XX with eigenvalue +1+1, is the pure state whose vector is the column (1/2,1/2)(1/\sqrt{2}, 1/\sqrt{2}): |+⟩=12(|0⟩+|1⟩).|+\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\bigl(|0\rangle + |1\rangle\bigr).(1)✦

The Schmidt Decomposition

A Schmidt decomposition of a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of a composite system S⊗TS \otimes T consists of nn positive numbers λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n whose squares sum to one, orthonormal vectors |a1⟩,…,|an⟩|a_1\rangle, \dots, |a_n\rangle in the state space of SS, and orthonormal vectors |b1⟩,…,|bn⟩|b_1\rangle, \dots, |b_n\rangle in the state space of TT, such that |ψ⟩=∑i=1nλi|ai⟩⊗|bi⟩.|\psi\rangle = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \lambda_i \, |a_i\rangle \otimes |b_i\rangle .(2)✦ The positive numbers λi\lambda_i of a Schmidt decomposition of |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle are the Schmidt coefficients of |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle. The number nn of terms in a Schmidt decomposition of |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle is the Schmidt number of |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle.

The Three States

The Bell state |Φ+⟩|\Phi^+\rangle is the pure state of two qubits whose vector is |00⟩+|11⟩|00\rangle + |11\rangle divided by its norm 2\sqrt{2}: |Φ+⟩=12(|00⟩+|11⟩).|\Phi^+\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\bigl(|00\rangle + |11\rangle\bigr).(3)✦

For pure states |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS and |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle of TT, the product state |ψ⟩⊗|φ⟩|\psi\rangle \otimes |\varphi\rangle is the pure state of S⊗TS \otimes T whose vector is the tensor product of the two vectors.✦ The second state is the product of two copies of (1): |+⟩|+⟩=|+⟩⊗|+⟩=12(|00⟩+|01⟩+|10⟩+|11⟩).|+\rangle|+\rangle = |+\rangle \otimes |+\rangle = \frac{1}{2}\bigl(|00\rangle + |01\rangle + |10\rangle + |11\rangle\bigr).(4)✦

For a nonzero vector |v⟩|v\rangle in the state space of SS, its normalization is the pure state of SS with vector |v⟩/⟨v|v⟩|v\rangle / \sqrt{\langle v|v\rangle}.✦ The third state |χ⟩|\chi\rangle is the normalization of |00⟩+|01⟩+|10⟩|00\rangle + |01\rangle + |10\rangle, a nonzero vector of norm 3\sqrt{3}.✦

For a real number ss, the vector |es⟩|e_s\rangle of the qubit is s|0⟩+|1⟩s|0\rangle + |1\rangle divided by its norm, |es⟩=s|0⟩+|1⟩1+s2,|e_s\rangle = \frac{s|0\rangle + |1\rangle}{\sqrt{1 + s^2}} ,(5)✦ The two values of ss used below are the golden ratio ϕ=(1+5)/2\phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 and its conjugate ϕ′=(1−5)/2\phi' = (1-\sqrt{5})/2, the two roots of x2=x+1x^2 = x + 1.

The Claim

Theorem 1. In the composite system of two qubits, each of the following is a Schmidt decomposition of the state on its left: |Φ+⟩=12|0⟩⊗|0⟩+12|1⟩⊗|1⟩,|\Phi^+\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \, |0\rangle \otimes |0\rangle + \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \, |1\rangle \otimes |1\rangle ,(6)✦ |+⟩|+⟩=1⋅|+⟩⊗|+⟩,|+\rangle|+\rangle = 1 \cdot |+\rangle \otimes |+\rangle ,(7)✦ |χ⟩=3+56|eϕ⟩⊗|eϕ⟩+3−56|eϕ′⟩⊗(−|eϕ′⟩).|\chi\rangle = \sqrt{\frac{3+\sqrt{5}}{6}} \; |e_{\phi}\rangle \otimes |e_{\phi}\rangle + \sqrt{\frac{3-\sqrt{5}}{6}} \; |e_{\phi'}\rangle \otimes \bigl(-|e_{\phi'}\rangle\bigr) .(8)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the Schmidt decomposition (2) of a pure state of two qubits, and over the three states as constructed: |Φ+⟩|\Phi^+\rangle from the vector |00⟩+|11⟩|00\rangle + |11\rangle, |+⟩|+⟩|+\rangle|+\rangle as a product of pure states, and |χ⟩|\chi\rangle as the normalization of |00⟩+|01⟩+|10⟩|00\rangle + |01\rangle + |10\rangle, with the vectors |eϕ⟩|e_\phi\rangle and |eϕ′⟩|e_{\phi'}\rangle of (5).

About these constructions the library proves that each gives a state of unit norm: |+⟩|+\rangle and |Φ+⟩|\Phi^+\rangle; the product of any two pure states, since the norm of a product vector is the product of the norms; and |χ⟩|\chi\rangle, since |00⟩+|01⟩+|10⟩|00\rangle + |01\rangle + |10\rangle is nonzero and a nonzero vector divided by its norm has norm one.
