The Exercise
Two quantum systems and share a pure state . The exercise asks for two tests that tell a product state from an entangled one. The first counts: is a product state exactly when its Schmidt number, the number of nonzero Schmidt coefficients, is one.✦ The second looks at the parts: is a product state exactly when the reduced state , the state of alone, is pure, and exactly when the reduced state , the state of alone, is pure. The library states the three equivalences separately, for any two quantum systems.
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two quantum systems and is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product .✦
A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on .✦ A pure state of is a unit vector of , with , and every pure state of determines the state of , the rank one projector onto .
Among the states, the pure ones are these projectors: a state of is pure when there is a pure state of with (1)✦
Products, Reduced States and the Schmidt Number
For pure states of and of , the product is the pure state of whose vector is the tensor product of the two vectors.✦ A pure state of is a product state when there are pure states of and of with (2)✦
The reduced state of a state of is the state of obtained by tracing out : the partial trace of over , computed in an orthonormal basis of , (3)✦ The reduced state of a state of is the state of , the partial trace of over in an orthonormal basis of .✦
Fix the standard orthonormal basis of . Any pure state of expands as , with each a vector of . The coefficient operator of is the linear operator from to that sends each to , (4)✦ The Schmidt number of a pure state of is the number of its nonzero Schmidt coefficients, which are the singular values of .✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a pure state of the composite system , and let and be the reduced states of on and on . Then (5)✦ (6)✦ (7)✦
What Is Checked
The three equivalences are stated over a pure state of the composite system , the product states (2), the reduced states and of with the purity of a state (1), and the Schmidt number of , counted from the singular values of its coefficient operator (4).
The library proves that the product of two pure states is a unit vector, since the norm of a product vector is the product of the norms. It proves that the projector onto a unit vector is a state, and that the partial trace of a state over either factor is a state, so that and are states of and of .
