Exercise 2.7 - The vectors (1,1)(1,1) and (1,−1)(1,-1) of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2, their inner product and their normalized forms

Two orthogonal vectors and their normalized forms.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Take the vectors |w⟩=(1,1)|w\rangle = (1,1) and |v⟩=(1,−1)|v\rangle = (1,-1) of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2, given by their components. The exercise asks to verify that they are orthogonal and to find their normalized forms, each vector divided by its norm.

The Vectors

All vectors here lie in ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 with its standard inner product, ⟨a|b⟩=a1*b1+a2*b2\langle a|b\rangle = a_1^* b_1 + a_2^* b_2 for |a⟩|a\rangle and |b⟩|b\rangle with components aia_i and bib_i, and the norm ∥|a⟩∥=⟨a|a⟩\| |a\rangle \| = \sqrt{\langle a|a\rangle} it induces.

The vector |w⟩|w\rangle is the vector of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 with both components equal to 11, |w⟩=(11).|w\rangle = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}.(1)✦ The vector |v⟩|v\rangle is the vector of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 with components 11 and −1-1, |v⟩=(1−1).|v\rangle = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ -1 \end{pmatrix}.(2)✦

The vector |wˆ⟩|\hat w\rangle of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 has both components equal to 1/21/\sqrt{2}, and the vector |vˆ⟩|\hat v\rangle of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 has components 1/21/\sqrt{2} and −1/2-1/\sqrt{2}: |wˆ⟩=(1/21/2),|\hat w\rangle = \begin{pmatrix} 1/\sqrt{2} \\ 1/\sqrt{2} \end{pmatrix},(3) |vˆ⟩=(1/2−1/2).|\hat v\rangle = \begin{pmatrix} 1/\sqrt{2} \\ -1/\sqrt{2} \end{pmatrix}.(4)

The Claim

Theorem 1. The vectors |w⟩|w\rangle and |v⟩|v\rangle of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 are orthogonal, ⟨w|v⟩=0,\langle w|v\rangle = 0,(5)✦ and their normalized forms are |wˆ⟩|\hat w\rangle and |vˆ⟩|\hat v\rangle: |wˆ⟩=1∥|w⟩∥|w⟩,|\hat w\rangle = \frac{1}{\| |w\rangle \|}\, |w\rangle,(6)✦ |vˆ⟩=1∥|v⟩∥|v⟩.|\hat v\rangle = \frac{1}{\| |v\rangle \|}\, |v\rangle.(7)✦

What Is Checked

The theorem is stated over the vectors |w⟩|w\rangle and |v⟩|v\rangle of (1) and (2), the vectors |wˆ⟩|\hat w\rangle and |vˆ⟩|\hat v\rangle of (3) and (4), and the inner product and norm of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2.
