Exercise 2.8 - The normalized Gram-Schmidt vectors of a basis span the whole inner product space

Gram-Schmidt vectors of a basis span the space.

The Exercise

Let VV be a vector space with an inner product and let |w1⟩,|w2⟩,…|w_1\rangle, |w_2\rangle, \ldots be a basis of VV, its vectors taken in a fixed order. The Gram-Schmidt procedure removes from each basis vector in turn its components along the vectors already made, and scales what is left to unit length: |v1⟩=|w1⟩∥|w1⟩∥,|vk+1⟩=|wk+1⟩−∑i=1k⟨vi|wk+1⟩|vi⟩∥|wk+1⟩−∑i=1k⟨vi|wk+1⟩|vi⟩∥.|v_1\rangle = \frac{|w_1\rangle}{\bigl\| |w_1\rangle \bigr\|}, \qquad |v_{k+1}\rangle = \frac{|w_{k+1}\rangle - \sum_{i=1}^{k} \langle v_i|w_{k+1}\rangle\,|v_i\rangle} {\bigl\| |w_{k+1}\rangle - \sum_{i=1}^{k} \langle v_i|w_{k+1}\rangle\,|v_i\rangle \bigr\|}.(1) The exercise is to show that these vectors span VV: every vector of VV is a linear combination of the |vk⟩|v_k\rangle.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let VV be a vector space over the real or the complex numbers with an inner product, and let |w1⟩,|w2⟩,…|w_1\rangle, |w_2\rangle, \ldots be a basis of VV, taken in a fixed order. Then the normalized Gram-Schmidt vectors |v1⟩,|v2⟩,…|v_1\rangle, |v_2\rangle, \ldots of this basis, given by (1), span VV: span⁡{|v1⟩,|v2⟩,…}=V.\operatorname{span}\,\{|v_1\rangle, |v_2\rangle, \ldots\} = V.(2)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over a basis of VV in a fixed order and over the normalized Gram-Schmidt vectors (1) made from that basis. What the library shows about these vectors is that they span VV, as in (2).✦
