The Exercise
A system is prepared in a state , and , for in a finite index set , are observables of that commute with one another. Each has an expectation value in . The exercise is to show that, because the observables commute, these expectation values come from a single classical probability distribution.
One measurement on suffices. Its outcome occurs with probability and comes with a pure state that is an eigenstate of every at once, so the outcome fixes a value of each observable, its eigenvalue. The expectation value of is the mean of under .
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of .✦ A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of , .✦
An observable on is a self adjoint operator on the state space of , .✦ The expectation value of an observable on in a state of is the real number (1)✦
Two observables and on commute when their operators commute, (2)✦ A pure state of is an eigenstate of an observable on with eigenvalue , a real number, when (3)✦
Measurements
A measurement on with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators on the state space of , one for each outcome , that satisfies the completeness relation (4)✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of the measurement assigns to the outcome the effect .✦ The probability of the outcome , when the measurement is performed on a state of , is given by the Born rule, (5)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a quantum system in a state , and let , , be a finite family of observables on that commute pairwise, for all . Then there are a finite set of outcomes , a measurement on with outcomes in , real numbers and pure states of such that the Born probabilities of the measurement in the state satisfy, for every and , (6)✦
What Is Checked
The claim rests on the notions of commuting observables (2), eigenstate (3), expectation value (1), completeness relation (4) and Born probabilities (5).
