The Exercise
Alice and Bob share Bell pairs ; Alice holds one qubit of each pair and Bob the other. Without the normalization , their joint state is (1)✦ the sum over the bit strings of length , with Alice’s th qubit paired with Bob’s th.
They distill entanglement with a stabilizer code on qubits. Alice projects her qubits onto the code space, and Bob projects his onto the complex conjugate of that space. Noise may first have struck Alice’s qubits with a Pauli error , which she undoes with a correction chosen from the measured syndrome before projecting. The exercise asks which vector the two projections leave, with and without the corrected error, and what its norm is.
The Pauli Group
The Pauli matrices are the four complex two by two matrices , , and , with rows and columns indexed by and (2)✦
For a string of indices , one for each of qubits, the Pauli string is the operator on the qubits whose matrix, with rows and columns labelled by bit strings and of length , has the entries (3)✦ The support of the string is the set of qubits with .
The Pauli group on qubits consists of the operators : each element is given by its phase power , an integer modulo , and its Pauli string .✦ The phase is the imaginary unit raised to the representative of in , one of the four fourth roots of unity.✦ The matrix of is the complex matrix , and below an element stands for its matrix.✦ The element of is the identity string with phase power .✦ The weight of an element of is the number of qubits in the support of its string.✦
The Code
The stabilizer sum of a subgroup of is the sum of the matrices of its elements.✦ The code projector of is the stabilizer sum divided by the number of elements of , (4)✦ the projector onto the code space of the stabilizer code with stabilizer . The complex conjugate of the code projector is the matrix whose entries are the complex conjugates of those of ; it is Bob’s projection.
The normalizer of is the set of elements of with . The distance of the stabilizer code with stabilizer is the least weight of an element of that is not equal to for any element of and integer ; when there is no such element, is infinite.✦
The Distilled State
The distilled vector of a subgroup of is the shared state (1) after Alice’s projection onto the code space: (5)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a subgroup of the Pauli group .
(i) Projecting both halves gives the distilled vector: (6)✦
(ii) Let be a natural number with , and let and be elements of of weight at most whose product lies in . Then there is a complex number with such that (7)✦
(iii) Let . If does not contain and has elements, then (8)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the distilled vector of (5), built from the code projector of (4), together with the matrices of the elements of , their weights and the distance . The distilled vector is the unnormalized maximally entangled state on the code space , that of encoded Bell pairs without the normalization.
