Exercise 12.32 - Parities of local Pauli outcomes are distributed as the two labels of a Bell measurement

Local parities give the two Bell labels.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Two qubits are in a state ρ\rho, pure or mixed. A measurement in the Bell basis finds them in one of the four Bell states |βxy⟩|\beta_{xy}\rangle and so returns two bits, the phase flip label xx and the bit flip label yy. Measurements on the qubits one at a time give each label’s statistics. Measure ZZ on each qubit and add the two outcome bits modulo 22: the sum is kk with the same probability as y=ky = k in the Bell measurement.✦ Measure XX on each qubit instead, and the sum is distributed as xx.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space✦, and any such space HH is the state space of a system.✦ The qubit QQ is the system with H=ℂ2H = \mathbb{C}^2✦; its computational basis states |0⟩|0\rangle and |1⟩|1\rangle are the standard basis vectors e0e_0 and e1e_1.✦ The composite system S⊗TS \otimes T of two systems has for its state space the tensor product of theirs, and two qubits form Q⊗QQ \otimes Q.✦

A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS is a unit vector in the state space of SS.✦ For pure states |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS and |φ⟩|\varphi\rangle of TT, the product |ψ⟩⊗|φ⟩|\psi\rangle \otimes |\varphi\rangle is the pure state of S⊗TS \otimes T whose vector is the tensor product of the two.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS, pure and mixed states alike.✦

Measurements

A measurement MM on SS with a finite set II of outcomes is a family of measurement operators MiM_i on the state space of SS, one for each outcome i∈Ii \in I, that satisfies the completeness relation, where 11 is the identity operator on the state space of SS, ∑i∈IMi†Mi=1.\sum_{i \in I} M_i^\dagger M_i = 1 .(1)✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of MM has the effects Ei=Mi†MiE_i = M_i^\dagger M_i.✦ When MM is performed on a state ρ\rho, outcome ii occurs with the Born probability pM(i|ρ)=Tr⁡(Eiρ)=Tr⁡(MiρMi†).p_M(i \,|\, \rho) = \operatorname{Tr}(E_i \rho) = \operatorname{Tr}(M_i \rho M_i^\dagger) .(2)✦

The projective measurement in an orthonormal basis {|bi⟩}\{|b_i\rangle\} has the projectors |bi⟩⟨bi||b_i\rangle\langle b_i| as its operators.✦ The square root measurement of a POVM with effects EiE_i has the operators Ei\sqrt{E_i}, so that Mi†Mi=EiM_i^\dagger M_i = E_i.✦ A measurement MM on SS acts on the first factor of a composite S⊗TS \otimes T through the operators Mi⊗1TM_i \otimes 1_T✦, and a measurement NN on TT acts on its second factor through 1S⊗Nj1_S \otimes N_j.✦ The cascade of two measurements LL and MM on one system, first LL and then MM, has the pairs (l,m)(l, m) as outcomes and the composites MmLlM_m L_l as operators.✦

To coarse grain a measurement MM with outcomes in II along a map gg from II to a set KK is to merge the outcomes that gg sends to the same value. The result MgM^g is the square root measurement, with outcomes in KK, of the POVM whose effects are Fk=∑i:g(i)=kEi.F_k = \sum_{i \,:\, g(i) = k} E_i .(3)✦

Local Pauli Measurements

An observable AA on SS is a self adjoint operator on the state space of SS.✦ With it come the operators P±=12(1±A),P_\pm = \tfrac{1}{2}(1 \pm A) ,(4) the projectors onto the ±1\pm 1 eigenspaces of AA when A2=1A^2 = 1. For an observable AA on SS with A2=1A^2 = 1 the sign measurement of AA is the projective measurement with two outcomes and operators M0=P+M_0 = P_+ and M1=P−M_1 = P_-: outcome 00 stands for the eigenvalue +1+1 and outcome 11 for −1-1.✦

The Pauli matrices are X=(0110),Y=(0−ii0),Z=(100−1).X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(5) For a real vector n→\vec{n} in three dimensions the matrix n→⋅σ→=nxX+nyY+nzZ\vec{n} \cdot \vec{\sigma} = n_x X + n_y Y + n_z Z✦ is Hermitian, and as an operator on ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 it is an observable of the qubit.✦ For a unit vector nˆ\hat{n} the observable nˆ⋅σ→\hat{n} \cdot \vec{\sigma} squares to 11; XX and ZZ are those for nˆ=(1,0,0)\hat{n} = (1, 0, 0) and nˆ=(0,0,1)\hat{n} = (0, 0, 1). The sign measurement of XX is the XX measurement of the qubit, a projective measurement whose outcomes 00 and 11 stand for |+⟩=(|0⟩+|1⟩)/2|+\rangle = (|0\rangle + |1\rangle)/\sqrt{2} and |−⟩=(|0⟩−|1⟩)/2|-\rangle = (|0\rangle - |1\rangle)/\sqrt{2}, and the sign measurement of ZZ is the ZZ measurement of the qubit, a projective measurement whose outcomes 00 and 11 stand for |0⟩|0\rangle and |1⟩|1\rangle.

The local XX measurement LXL_X on two qubits is the cascade of the XX measurement on the first qubit and the XX measurement on the second.✦ Write P0XP^X_0 and P1XP^X_1 for the projectors P+P_+ and P−P_- of XX. An outcome of LXL_X is a pair (a,b)(a, b) of bits, one for each qubit, with operator (1⊗PbX)(PaX⊗1)=PaX⊗PbX.(1 \otimes P^X_b)(P^X_a \otimes 1) = P^X_a \otimes P^X_b .(6) The local ZZ measurement LZL_Z is built in the same way from the ZZ measurement.✦ The parity of an outcome (a,b)(a, b) of either is a⊕ba \oplus b, the sum of the bits modulo 22.

The Bell Measurement

For bits xx and yy, with y‾=y⊕1\bar{y} = y \oplus 1 the flip of yy, the Bell vector is |βxy⟩=12(|0⟩|y⟩+(−1)x|1⟩|y‾⟩),|\beta_{xy}\rangle = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \bigl( |0\rangle|y\rangle + (-1)^x |1\rangle|\bar{y}\rangle \bigr) ,(7)✦ and the Bell state |βxy⟩|\beta_{xy}\rangle is the pure state of Q⊗QQ \otimes Q with this vector.✦ The four are |β00⟩=(|00⟩+|11⟩)/2|\beta_{00}\rangle = (|00\rangle + |11\rangle)/\sqrt{2}, |β01⟩=(|01⟩+|10⟩)/2|\beta_{01}\rangle = (|01\rangle + |10\rangle)/\sqrt{2}, |β10⟩=(|00⟩−|11⟩)/2|\beta_{10}\rangle = (|00\rangle - |11\rangle)/\sqrt{2} and |β11⟩=(|01⟩−|10⟩)/2|\beta_{11}\rangle = (|01\rangle - |10\rangle)/\sqrt{2}.✦ The four Bell states form the Bell basis, an orthonormal basis of the state space of Q⊗QQ \otimes Q.✦ The Bell measurement BB is the projective measurement in this basis, with the pairs (x,y)(x, y) as outcomes and the projectors |βxy⟩⟨βxy||\beta_{xy}\rangle\langle\beta_{xy}| as operators.✦

The Claim

Four coarse grainings enter the claim, each a measurement with outcomes k∈{0,1}k \in \{0, 1\}. Along the parity (a,b)↦a⊕b(a, b) \mapsto a \oplus b the local measurements give LX⊕L_X^{\oplus} and LZ⊕L_Z^{\oplus}. Along (x,y)↦x(x, y) \mapsto x and (x,y)↦y(x, y) \mapsto y, which keep the phase flip label and the bit flip label of a Bell outcome, the Bell measurement gives BpfB_{\mathrm{pf}} and BbfB_{\mathrm{bf}}.

Theorem 1. Let ρ\rho be a state of two qubits and kk a bit. The parity of the local XX outcomes is kk with the same probability as the phase flip label of the Bell outcome, pLX⊕(k|ρ)=pBpf(k|ρ),p_{L_X^{\oplus}}(k \,|\, \rho) = p_{B_{\mathrm{pf}}}(k \,|\, \rho) ,(8)✦ and the parity of the local ZZ outcomes is kk with the same probability as its bit flip label, pLZ⊕(k|ρ)=pBbf(k|ρ).p_{L_Z^{\oplus}}(k \,|\, \rho) = p_{B_{\mathrm{bf}}}(k \,|\, \rho) .(9)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over every state ρ\rho of two qubits and both values of kk.

The library proves that each Bell vector (7) has unit norm✦ and that the four are orthonormal.✦ Their number equals the dimension 44 of the state space of Q⊗QQ \otimes Q✦, so they form a basis.✦ The relations X2=1X^2 = 1✦ and Z2=1Z^2 = 1✦ make the projectors (4) of XX and of ZZ sign measurements. Every construction above is a measurement: a projective and a square root measurement satisfy the completeness relation (1) because their projectors or effects sum to the identity, and a measurement on one factor and a cascade inherit it from the measurements they are built from.
