Exercise 10.44 - For a subgroup of the Pauli group that does not contain −I-I, normalizing it and commuting with it are the same

The normalizer of a Pauli subgroup without −I-I is its centralizer.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Let SS be a subgroup of the Pauli group GnG_n on nn qubits that does not contain −I-I, and let gg be an element of GnG_n. The exercise asks to show that if conjugation by gg maps SS onto itself, possibly permuting its elements, then gg commutes with every element of SS.

The Pauli Group

The Pauli group GnG_n on nn qubits is the group, under multiplication, of the operators isP1⊗⋯⊗Pn,s∈ℤ4,Pj∈{I,X,Y,Z},i^s\, P_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes P_n, \qquad s \in \mathbb{Z}_4, \quad P_j \in \{I, X, Y, Z\},(1)✦ each given by its phase power ss, an integer modulo 4, and its Pauli string, the choice of PjP_j among the identity II and the Pauli operators XX, YY, ZZ for each qubit jj.

The element −I-I of GnG_n is the identity string with phase power s=2s = 2, −I=i2I⊗⋯⊗I.-I = i^2\, I \otimes \cdots \otimes I.(2)✦

For a subgroup SS of GnG_n, the normalizer N(S)N(S) and the centralizer Z(S)Z(S) of SS are the subgroups of GnG_n N(S)={g∈Gn:gSg†=S},Z(S)={g∈Gn:gs=sg for all s∈S}.N(S) = \{\, g \in G_n : g S g^\dagger = S \,\}, \qquad Z(S) = \{\, g \in G_n : g s = s g \text{ for all } s \in S \,\}.(3)

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let SS be a subgroup of the Pauli group GnG_n on nn qubits that does not contain −I-I. Then the normalizer of SS in GnG_n is its centralizer: N(S)=Z(S).N(S) = Z(S).(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the Pauli group GnG_n of (1), on any number nn of qubits, and over its subgroups SS.

About these constructions the library shows that GnG_n is a group under multiplication, with −I-I among its elements.
