The Exercise
An stabilizer code stores qubits in and has distance . Suppose the noise acts only on a known set of qubits, at most of them, while the error it leaves there is unknown: any tensor product of Pauli matrices on the qubits of , with any overall phase. The exercise is to show that the code corrects every such error.
The Pauli Group
The Pauli matrices are the four complex matrices , , and , where is the identity and (1)✦
The state space of qubits is , with its basis labelled by the bit strings . A Pauli string on qubits is an operator on this space, fixed by a choice of one Pauli matrix for each qubit ; its entry in row and column is .✦ The support of a Pauli string is the set of qubits with , those on which its factor is not the identity.✦
The Pauli group on qubits consists of the elements given by a phase power , an integer modulo , and a Pauli string .✦ The matrix of is its Pauli string times the phase , one of the four fourth roots of unity: (2)✦ The element of is the identity string with phase power , whose matrix is .✦ The weight of an element of is the number of qubits in the support of its string: (3)✦
A Stabilizer Code
The code is fixed by its stabilizer , a finite subgroup of that does not contain . The code projector of is the sum of the matrices of its elements divided by the order of , (4)✦ The code space of is the subspace of onto which projects.
The normalizer of is the set of elements of with . The distance of the code is the smallest weight of an element of whose Pauli string differs from that of every element of , and when there is none: (5)✦
The Claim
Each element of is an error on the qubits. An element of is located on a set of qubits when the support of its string lies in .
A quantum operation on corrects an error on a code when, for every state of the code, applying after returns that state. A set of errors is correctable on the code with stabilizer when there is a quantum operation with finitely many operation elements on , , that corrects every error of the set on the code with projector .
Theorem 1. Let be a finite subgroup of that does not contain , and let be a set of qubits with fewer elements than the distance of the code, (6)✦ Then the set of elements of located on is correctable on the code with stabilizer .✦
Theorem 2. Let be as in the first theorem, let be a natural number, and let be a set of qubits with (7)✦ Then the set of elements of located on is correctable on the code with stabilizer .✦
Taking for the distance of an code, the second theorem is the exercise.
What Is Checked
Both theorems are stated over the Pauli group with its phases and strings, the matrix (2) of each element as an operator on , the code projector (4), and the distance (5), built on the normalizer of and on the weight (3).
