The Exercise

A stabilizer code on nn qubits is fixed by its stabilizer SS, a group of Pauli operators that does not contain −I-I; the code is the space of states left unchanged by every element of SS. Noise strikes the qubits with one of finitely many Pauli errors EjE_j. The question is when a single recovery operation, the same whatever error occurred, restores every state of the code.

Theorem 10.8 answers it with a condition on the products Ej−1EkE_j^{-1} E_k of two errors. The condition is phrased through the normalizer N(S)N(S) of SS, the set of Pauli operators gg with gSg−1=Sg S g^{-1} = S.

The library states the theorem for the Pauli operators as matrices on the nn qubits, with the code given by its projector and the recovery by its operation elements.

The Pauli Group

The Pauli matrices are the four complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices σ0=I\sigma_0 = I, σ1=X\sigma_1 = X, σ2=Y\sigma_2 = Y and σ3=Z\sigma_3 = Z, with rows and columns indexed by {0,1}\{0,1\}, where X=(0110),Y=(0−ii0),Z=(100−1).X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(1)✦

The state space of nn qubits has a basis vector |x⟩|x\rangle for each bit string x=x1⋯xnx = x_1 \cdots x_n in {0,1}n\{0,1\}^n, and the entries of an operator on it are indexed by two such strings xx and yy. For a choice aa of one Pauli matrix σak\sigma_{a_k} on each qubit kk, the Pauli string σa1⊗⋯⊗σan\sigma_{a_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{a_n} is the operator on the nn qubits whose matrix entries are products of single qubit entries, ⟨x|σa1⊗⋯⊗σan|y⟩=∏k=1n(σak)xkyk.\langle x | \, \sigma_{a_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{a_n} \, | y \rangle = \prod_{k=1}^{n} (\sigma_{a_k})_{x_k y_k}.(2)✦

The Pauli group GnG_n on nn qubits consists of the operators isPi^s P, with PP a Pauli string and ss an integer modulo 44, the phase power.✦ The phase isi^s is ii raised to the representative of ss in {0,1,2,3}\{0,1,2,3\}, one of the four fourth roots of unity.✦ An element of GnG_n acts on the nn qubits by the complex 2n×2n2^n \times 2^n matrix isσa1⊗⋯⊗σan.i^s \, \sigma_{a_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{a_n}.(3) The element −I-I of GnG_n is the identity string I⊗⋯⊗II \otimes \cdots \otimes I with phase power s=2s = 2, so that i2I=−Ii^2 I = -I.✦

The Code and the Recovery

The code projector PSP_S of a subgroup SS of GnG_n is its stabilizer sum, the sum of the matrices of all the elements of SS, divided by the order |S||S| of SS: PS=1|S|∑s∈Ss.P_S = \frac{1}{|S|} \sum_{s \in S} s.(4)✦

A recovery ℛ\mathcal{R} on the nn qubits is a quantum operation, a map ρ↦∑oRoρRo†\rho \mapsto \sum_o R_o \rho R_o^\dagger given by finitely many operation elements RoR_o indexed by oo, operators on the state space of the qubits, and it is trace preserving when ∑oRo†Ro=I.\sum_o R_o^\dagger R_o = I.(5)

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let SS be a subgroup of the Pauli group GnG_n that does not contain −I-I, and let EjE_j, for jj in a finite index set JJ, be elements of GnG_n such that Ej−1Ek∉N(S)−Sfor all j,k∈J.E_j^{-1} E_k \notin N(S) - S \qquad \text{for all } j, k \in J.(6)✦ Then there is a recovery ℛ\mathcal{R}, with operation elements RoR_o satisfying (5), such that for every state ρ\rho of the code with projector PSP_S and every error EjE_j, applying ℛ\mathcal{R} to EjρEj†E_j \rho E_j^\dagger returns ρ\rho up to normalization.
