Theorem 9.6 - Monotonicity of the fidelity of two states under a channel on one system

Fidelity never decreases under a quantum channel.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of a quantum system SS are sent through the same quantum channel, a physical process acting on SS, noisy or not. The fidelity measures how close two states are.

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a density operator on the state space of SS: a positive operator of unit trace.✦

The Fidelity

The fidelity of two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is the nonnegative real number F(ρ,σ)=tr⁡ρσρ,F(\rho,\sigma) = \operatorname{tr}\sqrt{\sqrt{\rho}\,\sigma\sqrt{\rho}},(1)✦ where the square root of a positive operator is the positive operator with the same eigenvectors and the square roots of its eigenvalues.

Quantum Channels

A quantum channel ff on SS is a map taking states of SS to states of SS that agrees on states with a completely positive, trace preserving linear map Φ\Phi on the operators of the state space of SS: f(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ,tr⁡Φ(A)=tr⁡Afor every operator A.f(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \ \text{for every state } \rho, \qquad \operatorname{tr}\Phi(A) = \operatorname{tr}A \ \text{for every operator } A.(2)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let ff be a quantum channel on a system SS, and let ρ\rho and σ\sigma be states of SS. Then F(ρ,σ)≤F(f(ρ),f(σ)).F(\rho,\sigma) \le F\bigl(f(\rho), f(\sigma)\bigr).(3)✦
