Exercise 9.17 - The angle built from the fidelity lies between zero and a right angle, and is zero only for equal states

Bounds on the angle between two states.

The Exercise

Two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of one quantum system have a fidelity F(ρ,σ)F(\rho,\sigma), and the fidelity fixes an angle A(ρ,σ)A(\rho,\sigma) between them. The exercise asks to show that this angle lies between 00 and π/2\pi/2, and that it is zero exactly when ρ\rho and σ\sigma are the same state.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical object described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦

The Fidelity and the Angle

The fidelity of two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is the nonnegative real number F(ρ,σ)=tr⁡ρσρ,F(\rho,\sigma) = \operatorname{tr}\sqrt{\sqrt{\rho}\,\sigma\sqrt{\rho}},(1)✦ where the square root of a positive operator is taken eigenvalue by eigenvalue.

The angle A(ρ,σ)A(\rho,\sigma) between two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is the real number A(ρ,σ)=arccos⁡F(ρ,σ).A(\rho,\sigma) = \arccos F(\rho,\sigma).(2)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let ρ\rho and σ\sigma be states of a quantum system SS. Then the angle between them satisfies A(ρ,σ)≥0A(\rho,\sigma) \ge 0(3)✦ and A(ρ,σ)≤π2,A(\rho,\sigma) \le \frac{\pi}{2},(4)✦ and it vanishes exactly when the two states are equal: A(ρ,σ)=0⇔ρ=σ.A(\rho,\sigma) = 0 \iff \rho = \sigma.(5)✦

What Is Checked

The theorem is stated over two arbitrary states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of a quantum system SS and over the angle (2) between them, built on their fidelity (1).
