The Exercise
A qubit, the principal system, interacts with a second qubit, its environment, which starts in the state . The interaction is a controlled flip with the system as the control: the environment is flipped when the system is in and left alone when the system is in . The environment is then discarded. The exercise asks for the quantum operation this process induces on the system, in the operator sum representation.
The library defines that operation from the interaction and the environment’s initial state, and states its operator sum form.
A Qubit and Its Environment
Let be the state space of a qubit and , its computational basis. The system and the environment each have state space , and together they have , with the system’s factor first.
For in , the projector onto is the rank one operator on .✦ The bit flip is the operator on that exchanges the two basis vectors: (1)✦
The controlled flip is the operator on given by (2)✦ with the identity on .
The dilation of the controlled flip is the linear map from to that adjoins the environment in and then applies : (3)✦ for every vector in .
The dephasing operation is the map that sends each operator on to the partial trace over the environment, the second factor, of : (4)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be an operator on the state space of the qubit. Then the dephasing operation acts on it as (5)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the dephasing operation of (4), which rests on the dilation of (3) and through it on the controlled flip of (2), built from the bit flip and the projectors and .
What the library proves about these constructions is the identity (5), for every operator on and not only for density operators.
