Exercise 8.3 - The channel left by discarding two of four interacting systems, as an operator sum

An operator sum when input and output systems differ.

The Exercise

Two systems AA and BB together form a joint system ABAB, which starts in a state ρ\rho. It is brought into contact with an environment, a second joint system CDCD prepared in a pure state |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle, and the four systems interact through a unitary UU. Afterwards AA and DD are discarded, which leaves a state ℰ(ρ)\mathcal{E}(\rho) of the joint system BCBC formed by the two remaining systems. The channel ℰ\mathcal{E} thus takes the states of one system to the states of another, and the exercise is to show that it still has an operator sum representation: ℰ(ρ)=∑kEkρEk†\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \sum_k E_k \, \rho \, E_k^\dagger with operation elements EkE_k that map the state space of ABAB into that of BCBC and satisfy the completeness relation ∑kEk†Ek=I\sum_k E_k^\dagger E_k = I.

Systems and States

A quantum system SS is described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system S⊗TS \otimes T of two quantum systems SS and TT is the system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of SS and TT.✦ A pair of letters stands for the composite, AB=A⊗BAB = A \otimes B, and the four systems together form AB⊗CDAB \otimes CD.

A state ρ\rho of a system SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle of SS is a unit vector in the state space of SS; as a state it is the projector |ψ⟩⟨ψ|\lvert\psi\rangle\langle\psi\rvert onto that vector. For a state ρ\rho of SS and a state σ\sigma of TT, the product state ρ⊗σ\rho \otimes \sigma is the state of S⊗TS \otimes T given by the tensor product of the operators ρ\rho and σ\sigma.✦ The partial trace over TT of a state ρ\rho of S⊗TS \otimes T is the reduced state Tr⁡Tρ\operatorname{Tr}_T \rho of SS, obtained by tracing out the right factor.✦

A unitary UU of SS is an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=IU^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = I.✦ Under it a state ρ\rho of SS evolves into UρU†U \rho U^\dagger.✦

An identification ee of a system SS with a system S′S' is a linear isometry of the state space of SS onto that of S′S'; it relabels a state ρ\rho of SS as the state eρe−1e \rho e^{-1} of S′S'. The composite of an identification ee of SS with S′S' and an identification ff of S′S' with S″S'' is the identification f∘ef \circ e of SS with S″S'', first ee and then ff.✦ The product of an identification ee of SS with S′S' and an identification gg of TT with T′T' is the identification e⊗ge \otimes g of S⊗TS \otimes T with S′⊗T′S' \otimes T' by the tensor product of the two isometries.✦ The identity identification of SS is the identification of SS with itself by the identity map of its state space.✦ The swap of SS and TT is the identification of S⊗TS \otimes T with T⊗ST \otimes S by u⊗v↦v⊗uu \otimes v \mapsto v \otimes u, for uu in the state space of SS and vv in that of TT.✦ The interchange of four systems S1S_1, S2S_2, S3S_3, S4S_4 is the identification of (S1⊗S2)⊗(S3⊗S4)(S_1 \otimes S_2) \otimes (S_3 \otimes S_4) with (S1⊗S3)⊗(S2⊗S4)(S_1 \otimes S_3) \otimes (S_2 \otimes S_4) that exchanges the two inner factors.✦

The Channel

Discarding AA and DD means tracing out ADAD, so the four systems are first regrouped as BC⊗ADBC \otimes AD. The regrouping τ\tau is the identification of AB⊗CDAB \otimes CD with BC⊗ADBC \otimes AD composed of the product of the swap of AA and BB with the identity of CDCD, followed by the interchange of (B⊗A)⊗(C⊗D)(B \otimes A) \otimes (C \otimes D).✦ On product vectors, with aa, bb, cc and dd vectors in the state spaces of AA, BB, CC and DD, (a⊗b)⊗(c⊗d)↦(b⊗a)⊗(c⊗d)↦(b⊗c)⊗(a⊗d).(a \otimes b) \otimes (c \otimes d) \;\mapsto\; (b \otimes a) \otimes (c \otimes d) \;\mapsto\; (b \otimes c) \otimes (a \otimes d).(1)

For a pure state |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle of CDCD and a unitary UU of AB⊗CDAB \otimes CD, the channel ℰ\mathcal{E} of the exercise takes a state ρ\rho of ABAB to the state of BCBC ℰ(ρ)=Tr⁡AD[τU(ρ⊗|ψ⟩⟨ψ|)U†τ−1].\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \operatorname{Tr}_{AD} \Bigl[ \tau \, U \bigl( \rho \otimes \lvert\psi\rangle\langle\psi\rvert \bigr) U^\dagger \, \tau^{-1} \Bigr].(2)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let AA, BB, CC and DD be quantum systems, |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle a pure state of CDCD, UU a unitary of AB⊗CDAB \otimes CD, and ℰ\mathcal{E} the channel (2). Then there are finitely many linear operators EkE_k from the state space of ABAB to that of BCBC such that, with II the identity on the state space of ABAB, ℰ(ρ)=∑kEkρEk†for every state ρ of AB,∑kEk†Ek=I.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \sum_k E_k \, \rho \, E_k^\dagger \quad \text{for every state } \rho \text{ of } AB, \qquad \sum_k E_k^\dagger E_k = I.(3)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the channel (2), with the four systems, the pure state of CDCD and the unitary all arbitrary.

The library proves that each step of (2) yields a density operator: the projector onto a unit vector is one, and so are the tensor product of two density operators, the conjugate of one by a unitary or by an isometry, and the partial trace of one.
