Exercise 8.20 - A controlled rotation and a controlled NOT on a qubit and its environment give amplitude damping with γ=sin⁡2(θ/2)\gamma = \sin^2(\theta/2)

Amplitude damping from a circuit on two qubits.

The Exercise

A qubit QQ is coupled to a second qubit EE, its environment, prepared in the state |0⟩|0\rangle. The two pass through the circuit of Figure 8.13 of the book. First QQ controls a rotation of EE through an angle θ\theta about the yˆ\hat{y} axis; then a controlled not (CNOT) gate, with EE as its control, flips QQ. Afterwards EE is discarded. The exercise is to show that QQ has undergone amplitude damping, with damping parameter γ=sin⁡2(θ/2)\gamma = \sin^2(\theta/2).

Operators on a Qubit

Let HH be the state space of a qubit, with computational basis |0⟩|0\rangle, |1⟩|1\rangle. For ii in {0,1}\{0,1\}, the projector PiP_i onto |i⟩|i\rangle is the operator |i⟩⟨i||i\rangle\langle i| on HH.✦ The bit flip, or Pauli operator XX, is the operator |0⟩⟨1|+|1⟩⟨0||0\rangle\langle 1| + |1\rangle\langle 0| on HH; it exchanges the two basis states.✦ The lowering operator σ−\sigma_- on HH is |0⟩⟨1||0\rangle\langle 1|, which takes |1⟩|1\rangle to |0⟩|0\rangle and annihilates |0⟩|0\rangle.✦

The rotation generator GG is the operator on HH G=|1⟩⟨0|−|0⟩⟨1|.G = |1\rangle\langle 0| - |0\rangle\langle 1| .(1)✦ The rotation Ry(θ)R_y(\theta) through an angle θ\theta about the yˆ\hat{y} axis is the operator on HH Ry(θ)=cos⁡θ2I+sin⁡θ2G=(cos⁡θ2−sin⁡θ2sin⁡θ2cos⁡θ2),R_y(\theta) = \cos\frac{\theta}{2}\, I + \sin\frac{\theta}{2}\, G = \begin{pmatrix} \cos\frac{\theta}{2} & -\sin\frac{\theta}{2} \\[2pt] \sin\frac{\theta}{2} & \cos\frac{\theta}{2} \end{pmatrix},(2)✦ where II is the identity on HH and the matrix is taken in the computational basis.

Amplitude Damping

Amplitude damping describes a qubit that decays from |1⟩|1\rangle to |0⟩|0\rangle with probability γ\gamma. The operation elements of amplitude damping with parameter γ\gamma are the operators E0E_0 and E1E_1 on HH given by E0=P0+1−γP1,E1=γσ−.E_0 = P_0 + \sqrt{1-\gamma}\, P_1 , \qquad E_1 = \sqrt{\gamma}\, \sigma_- .(3) The amplitude damping channel ℰAD,γ\mathcal{E}_{\mathrm{AD},\gamma} is the map on operators on HH given by ℰAD,γ(ρ)=E0ρE0†+E1ρE1†.\mathcal{E}_{\mathrm{AD},\gamma}(\rho) = E_0\, \rho\, E_0^\dagger + E_1\, \rho\, E_1^\dagger .(4)✦

The Circuit

The circuit acts on the state space H⊗HH \otimes H of the two qubits, with QQ in the first factor and EE in the second. The controlled rotation CRy(θ)CR_y(\theta) is the operator on H⊗HH \otimes H that rotates EE by Ry(θ)R_y(\theta) when QQ is in |1⟩|1\rangle: CRy(θ)=P0⊗I+P1⊗Ry(θ).CR_y(\theta) = P_0 \otimes I + P_1 \otimes R_y(\theta) .(5)✦ The controlled not CNOT\mathrm{CNOT} on H⊗HH \otimes H is the operator that flips QQ when EE is in |1⟩|1\rangle and leaves it unchanged when EE is in |0⟩|0\rangle: CNOT=I⊗P0+X⊗P1.\mathrm{CNOT} = I \otimes P_0 + X \otimes P_1 .(6) The circuit U(θ)U(\theta) is the controlled rotation followed by the CNOT: U(θ)=CNOTCRy(θ).U(\theta) = \mathrm{CNOT}\; CR_y(\theta) .(7)✦

The dilation V(θ)V(\theta) of the circuit is the linear map from HH to H⊗HH \otimes H that prepares EE in |0⟩|0\rangle and then applies U(θ)U(\theta): V(θ)|ψ⟩=U(θ)(|ψ⟩⊗|0⟩)for every |ψ⟩ in H.V(\theta)\, |\psi\rangle = U(\theta) \bigl( |\psi\rangle \otimes |0\rangle \bigr) \qquad \text{for every } |\psi\rangle \text{ in } H .(8)✦ The channel ℰθ\mathcal{E}_\theta of the circuit sends an operator ρ\rho on HH through the dilation and discards the environment: ℰθ(ρ)=trE(V(θ)ρV(θ)†),\mathcal{E}_\theta(\rho) = \mathrm{tr}_E \bigl( V(\theta)\, \rho\, V(\theta)^\dagger \bigr) ,(9)✦ where trE\mathrm{tr}_E is the partial trace over the second factor.

The Claim

On the computational basis the dilation acts as V(θ)|0⟩=|0⟩|0⟩,V(θ)|1⟩=cos⁡θ2|1⟩|0⟩+sin⁡θ2|0⟩|1⟩,V(\theta)|0\rangle = |0\rangle|0\rangle , \qquad V(\theta)|1\rangle = \cos\frac{\theta}{2}\, |1\rangle|0\rangle + \sin\frac{\theta}{2}\, |0\rangle|1\rangle ,(10) so tracing out EE leaves QQ with the operators P0+cos⁡θ2P1P_0 + \cos\frac{\theta}{2}\, P_1 and sin⁡θ2σ−\sin\frac{\theta}{2}\, \sigma_-, one for each basis state of the environment. For 0≤θ≤π0 \le \theta \le \pi the half angle lies between 00 and π/2\pi/2, where cosine and sine are nonnegative; then cos⁡θ2=1−γ\cos\frac{\theta}{2} = \sqrt{1-\gamma} and sin⁡θ2=γ\sin\frac{\theta}{2} = \sqrt{\gamma} for γ=sin⁡2θ2\gamma = \sin^2\frac{\theta}{2}.

Theorem 1. Let θ\theta be an angle with 0≤θ≤π0 \le \theta \le \pi. Then on every operator ρ\rho on HH the channel of the circuit is amplitude damping with parameter sin⁡2(θ/2)\sin^2(\theta/2): ℰθ(ρ)=ℰAD,sin⁡2(θ/2)(ρ).\mathcal{E}_\theta(\rho) = \mathcal{E}_{\mathrm{AD},\,\sin^2(\theta/2)}(\rho) .(11)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over two channels: the channel ℰθ\mathcal{E}_\theta of the circuit (9), built through the dilation (8) on the circuit (7) and its gates (5) and (6), and the amplitude damping channel (4) with its operation elements (3). What the library proves about these constructions is the equality (11) of the two.
