The Exercise
A qudit has levels , with a prime, and the cyclic shift moves each level up by one, from back to . For each level , the Fourier state , the image of under the inverse quantum Fourier transform, is an eigenstate of with eigenvalue . Phase estimation with control qubits reads the phase off this eigenvalue: it returns bits, and the binary number they spell gives the estimate . The best estimate, the multiple of nearest to counted modulo one, comes out with probability at least , however many control qubits are used.✦
Systems and States
A quantum system is described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space; every such space is the state space of a system, the system modelled on . The composite system of two systems has the tensor product of their state spaces as its state space.✦ The qudit with levels is the system modelled on , whose computational basis is the orthonormal basis of standard unit vectors . The qubit is the system modelled on , the qudit with two levels.✦
A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of , and each computational basis state is a pure state of its qudit. A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of .✦ A pure state gives the state , the projector onto .✦
An identification of a system with a system is a linear isometric bijection from the state space of onto that of ; its inverse identifies with .
Gates
A unitary of , also called a gate on , is an operator on the state space of with , and it carries a pure state of to . The adjoint of a unitary of is a unitary of as well.✦ For unitaries of and of , the product unitary of has the tensor product of the two operators as its operator; with the identity of it is the gate , which acts on the first factor of the composite and leaves the second alone. The factors of a composite are its wires.
Along an identification of with , a unitary of becomes the unitary of .✦
Every linear isometric bijection of the state space of onto itself is a unitary of .✦ On the qudit with levels, the basis permutation gate of a permutation of the levels is the unitary that carries each basis state to .✦ For a level of the qudit with levels, the shift is the basis permutation gate that adds modulo : (1)✦
The quantum Fourier transform on the qudit with levels is the unitary whose matrix in the computational basis is (2)✦ The inverse of the quantum Fourier transform is its adjoint, and the inverse transform of a basis state is the pure state (3)
The Circuit
The control register of qubits around a system is built by composing qubits on the left of one at a time: with no qubit it is itself, and with it is a qubit composed with the control register of qubits around .✦ Its control wires are numbered to from the left, and the target sits on the right. For bits and a pure state of , the phase estimation input state is the pure state of the register.✦
With the Hadamard gate of the qubit, the Hadamard layer of the control register of qubits around is the gate , which applies on every control wire and the identity on the target.✦ For a unitary of , the controlled powers of form the gate in which wire applies to the target when it is in .✦
The last gate is the inverse Fourier transform on the control wires. The split of the control register of qubits around is the identification of that register with the composite of qubits and , made by splitting off one qubit at a time. The control register of qubits around the trivial system is identified with the qudit with levels, and along this identification becomes the inverse quantum Fourier transform on the qubits.
The inverse Fourier readout gate of the control register of qubits around is the gate on the composite of qubits and , carried back along the inverse of the split.✦
The phase estimation circuit for a unitary of with control qubits is the gate on the control register of qubits around that applies the Hadamard layer, then the controlled powers of , then the inverse Fourier readout gate. On the qudit with levels, with , it takes the input state with every bit and to (4)
The Measurement
A measurement on with a finite set of outcomes is a family of operators on the state space of , one for each outcome , satisfying the completeness relation (5)✦ The effects of a measurement on make up its positive operator valued measure.✦ The probability of the outcome on a state of is given by the Born rule, (6)✦
A measurement on extends to as the measurement on the first wires, with the same outcomes and the operators .✦
Along an identification of with , a measurement on becomes the measurement on with the operators .✦
The measurement of every control wire measures the register of qubits in the computational basis, one bit on each wire , and its outcome is the string .✦ The readout of the control register of qubits around is the measurement of every control wire on the first wires of the composite of qubits and , carried back along the inverse of the split.
A string is read as the integer (7)✦
The nearest bin to a phase among bins is the integer nearest to , reduced modulo : (8)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a prime, a level of the qudit with levels, and . Let be the output (4) of the circuit with control qubits, and let be a string of bits. Then the readout on the state gives with probability at least : (9)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the qudit with levels and the control register of qubits around it, the Hadamard layer, the controlled powers of and the inverse Fourier readout gate built on that register, the output state and the measurement of every control wire carried back to the register around the target. It also uses the cyclic shift , the state , the integer read from a bit string and the nearest bin .
The library proves that the matrix (2) is unitary, so that is a unitary of the qudit, and that the tensor product of two unitaries and a unitary carried along an identification are unitaries again. The library also proves that the extension of a measurement to a composite and its transport along an identification are measurements again, with the completeness relation (5), and that the projector onto a unit vector is a state. The library also proves that the effects of a measurement are positive operators that sum to the identity, and that a unitary carries a pure state to a pure state, since it preserves norms.
