Exercise 5.26 - The sum of a character over a product subgroup, one cyclic factor at a time

A character sum splits along the cyclic factors.

The Exercise

The exercise belongs to the hidden subgroup problem on a finite abelian group G=ℤn1×⋯×ℤnMG = \mathbb{Z}_{n_1} \times \cdots \times \mathbb{Z}_{n_M}, a product of cyclic groups. The quantum Fourier transform over GG, applied to a uniform superposition over a coset of the hidden subgroup KK, gives each outcome ℓ∈G\ell \in G an amplitude proportional to a sum, over the elements of KK, of the character of GG labelled by ℓ\ell. The exercise takes a hidden subgroup that splits along the same cyclic factors as GG, and asks to reduce that sum, and the condition that it equal the order |K||K| of KK, to the separate factors.

Characters and Product Subgroups

An element gg of GG is a tuple (g1,…,gM)(g_1, \dots, g_M) with each gjg_j in ℤnj\mathbb{Z}_{n_j}. The character χℓ\chi_\ell of GG labelled by ℓ∈G\ell \in G is the complex function on GG χℓ(g)=∏j=1Me2πiℓjgj/nj,\chi_\ell(g) = \prod_{j=1}^{M} e^{2\pi i \, \ell_j g_j / n_j},(1) the product over the factors of the standard character x↦e2πix/njx \mapsto e^{2\pi i x / n_j} of ℤnj\mathbb{Z}_{n_j}, evaluated at the product ℓjgj\ell_j g_j taken in ℤnj\mathbb{Z}_{n_j}.

Let KjK_j be a subgroup of ℤnj\mathbb{Z}_{n_j} for each jj. Their product subgroup K=K1×⋯×KMK = K_1 \times \cdots \times K_M is the subgroup of GG of the elements hh with hj∈Kjh_j \in K_j for every jj.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let KK be the product subgroup of subgroups KjK_j of the factors ℤnj\mathbb{Z}_{n_j} of GG, and let ℓ∈G\ell \in G. The sum of the character χℓ\chi_\ell over KK is a product of one sum per factor, ∑h∈Kχℓ(h)=∏j=1M∑hj∈Kje2πiℓjhj/nj,\sum_{h \in K} \chi_\ell(h) = \prod_{j=1}^{M} \, \sum_{h_j \in K_j} e^{2\pi i \, \ell_j h_j / n_j},(2)✦ and it equals the order of KK exactly when the sum of every factor equals the order of that factor’s subgroup: ∑h∈Kχℓ(h)=|K|⇔∑hj∈Kje2πiℓjhj/nj=|Kj| for every j.\sum_{h \in K} \chi_\ell(h) = |K| \quad\Longleftrightarrow\quad \sum_{h_j \in K_j} e^{2\pi i \, \ell_j h_j / n_j} = |K_j| \ \text{ for every } j.(3)✦

What Is Checked

The equivalence (3) is stated over the product subgroup KK of the subgroups KjK_j, an element ℓ\ell of GG, and the standard characters of the cyclic factors, with |K||K| and |Kj||K_j| the orders of the groups. What the library proves about the product subgroup is the factorization (2) of a character sum over it.
