Exercise 4.51 - The evolution of three qubits under one Pauli string, obtained from another by a gate on each qubit

Simulating a Pauli string Hamiltonian by a change of basis.

The Exercise

Three qubits evolve under the Hamiltonian X⊗Y⊗ZX \otimes Y \otimes Z: the Pauli XX acts on the first qubit, YY on the second and ZZ on the third. Exercise 4.51 asks for this evolution over any interval of time, built from the evolution under Z⊗Z⊗ZZ \otimes Z \otimes Z and from gates that each act on a single qubit. The library answers with one identity between unitaries of the three qubits.

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical object whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The qudit with dd levels is the quantum system whose state space is ℂd\mathbb{C}^d with its standard inner product.✦ A qubit is the qudit with two levels, and the qudit with 2n2^n levels is the register of nn qubits; the exercise takes place on the register of three, with state space ℂ8\mathbb{C}^8.

An observable AA of SS is a self adjoint operator on the state space of SS, A†=AA^\dagger = A; its real spectrum is the set of values a measurement can return. A unitary UU of SS is an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = 1, an evolution of SS as a closed system.✦ For unitaries UU and VV of SS, the composite UVUV is the unitary of SS that applies VV first and then UU.✦ The adjoint U†U^\dagger of a unitary UU of SS is again a unitary of SS.✦

The propagator UA(t1,t2)U_A(t_1, t_2) of an observable AA of SS, taken as the Hamiltonian, from time t1t_1 to time t2t_2 is the unitary UA(t1,t2)=exp⁡[−iA(t2−t1)ℏ]U_A(t_1, t_2) = \exp\!\left[-\frac{i A (t_2 - t_1)}{\hbar}\right](1)✦ of SS, with ℏ\hbar Planck’s constant. It solves the Schrödinger equation: a state |ψ(t1)⟩|\psi(t_1)\rangle at time t1t_1 becomes |ψ(t2)⟩=UA(t1,t2)|ψ(t1)⟩|\psi(t_2)\rangle = U_A(t_1, t_2) |\psi(t_1)\rangle at time t2t_2.

Pauli Strings

The Pauli matrices are the four complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices σ0=I,σ1=X=(0110),σ2=Y=(0−ii0),σ3=Z=(100−1),\sigma_0 = I, \quad \sigma_1 = X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \quad \sigma_2 = Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \quad \sigma_3 = Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix},(2)✦ with II the identity and ii the imaginary unit.

The tensor product M1⊗⋯⊗MnM_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes M_n of nn complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices is the operator on nn qubits whose matrix, with rows and columns labelled by strings aa and bb of nn bits, has the entries (M1⊗⋯⊗Mn)ab=∏k=1n(Mk)akbk.(M_1 \otimes \cdots \otimes M_n)_{ab} = \prod_{k=1}^{n} (M_k)_{a_k b_k}.(3)✦ For a choice gg of one Pauli matrix σgk\sigma_{g_k} for each qubit kk, the Pauli string σg1⊗⋯⊗σgn\sigma_{g_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{g_n} is the tensor product (3) of these matrices.✦

For a choice gg of one Pauli matrix σgk\sigma_{g_k} for each of nn qubits and a real number cc, the Pauli string Hamiltonian cσg1⊗⋯⊗σgnc\, \sigma_{g_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{g_n} is the observable of the register of nn qubits that acts on its state vectors as cc times the matrix of the Pauli string. With c=1c = 1, the choices (1,2,3)(1, 2, 3) and (3,3,3)(3, 3, 3) give the Hamiltonians X⊗Y⊗ZX \otimes Y \otimes Z and Z⊗Z⊗ZZ \otimes Z \otimes Z of three qubits.

The Basis Change

The Hadamard gate HH and the phase gate SS are the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices H=12(111−1),S=(100i).H = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 1 & -1 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad S = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & i \end{pmatrix}.(4) The basis change gate for YY is SHSH, the Hadamard gate followed by the phase gate; for XX it is HH, and for ZZ it is II. The basis change family of a Pauli string on nn qubits is the list of nn gates whose kkth entry is the basis change gate of the kkth Pauli matrix of the string. The gate SHSH takes the eigenbasis of ZZ to the eigenbasis of YY, as HH takes it to the eigenbasis of XX.

The basis change gate H⊗SH⊗IH \otimes SH \otimes I is the unitary of the register of three qubits given by the tensor product (3) of the basis change family (H,SH,I)(H, SH, I).

The Claim

Theorem 1. For all real numbers ℏ\hbar, t1t_1 and t2t_2, the propagator of the Hamiltonian X⊗Y⊗ZX \otimes Y \otimes Z of three qubits from time t1t_1 to time t2t_2 is the propagator of Z⊗Z⊗ZZ \otimes Z \otimes Z over the same interval, conjugated by the basis change gate: e−i(X⊗Y⊗Z)(t2−t1)/ℏ=(H⊗SH⊗I)e−i(Z⊗Z⊗Z)(t2−t1)/ℏ(H⊗SH⊗I)†.e^{-i (X \otimes Y \otimes Z)(t_2 - t_1)/\hbar} = (H \otimes SH \otimes I)\, e^{-i (Z \otimes Z \otimes Z)(t_2 - t_1)/\hbar}\, (H \otimes SH \otimes I)^\dagger .(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the register of three qubits, the qudit with eight levels, and over three of its unitaries: the propagators (1) of the Pauli string Hamiltonians X⊗Y⊗ZX \otimes Y \otimes Z and Z⊗Z⊗ZZ \otimes Z \otimes Z, and the basis change gate H⊗SH⊗IH \otimes SH \otimes I, composed with its adjoint.
