The Exercise
The Hamiltonian of a quantum system is written as a sum of Hermitian terms that need not commute, and the evolution it generates is to be built, in units with , from the evolutions of the terms alone. Over a time step the terms act one at a time, first and last, and then once more in the reverse order, from back to . Each term acts for a time in all, so the step is compared with the true evolution . The exercise is to show that the two differ by an error of order , and that steps in succession differ from by at most for a constant .
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ An observable of is a self adjoint operator on the state space of , , whose real spectrum is the set of its possible measured values; the Hamiltonian and its terms are observables of .✦ A unitary of is a closed system evolution of : an operator on the state space of with (1)✦
The propagator of an observable of , with Planck’s constant , from time to time is the unitary (2)✦ which solves the Schrödinger equation, . With and it is , the form of every evolution in the exercise.
The gate error between two unitaries and of is the operator norm of their difference, (3)✦
The Symmetric Trotter Step
The symmetric Trotter step of observables of with time step is the unitary (4)✦ where each factor is the propagator (2) of .
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a quantum system, observables of , and an observable of equal to their sum, . Then there is a constant such that every time step satisfies (5)✦ and there is a constant such that every integer and every time step satisfy (6)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the symmetric Trotter step (4) of the terms , the propagator (2) of their sum over the times and , and the gate error (3) between two unitaries of the quantum system .
