Theorem 2.5 - The positive operators of unit trace are exactly the mixtures of pure states

Every density operator comes from an ensemble.

The Theorem

A system is prepared in one of the pure states |ψ1⟩,…,|ψn⟩\lvert\psi_1\rangle, \dots, \lvert\psi_n\rangle, in the state |ψi⟩\lvert\psi_i\rangle with probability pip_i. It is then described by the density operator of the ensemble {pi,|ψi⟩}\{p_i, \lvert\psi_i\rangle\}, ρ=∑i=1npi|ψi⟩⟨ψi|.\rho = \sum_{i=1}^{n} p_i \, \lvert\psi_i\rangle\langle\psi_i\rvert .(1)✦ Theorem 2.5 says which operators arise in this way: an operator ρ\rho is the density operator of some ensemble if and only if it has trace one and is positive.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is described by its state space ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle of SS is a unit vector of ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, ⟨ψ|ψ⟩=1\langle\psi\vert\psi\rangle = 1; it determines the operator |ψ⟩⟨ψ|\lvert\psi\rangle\langle\psi\rvert on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, the rank one projector onto |ψ⟩\lvert\psi\rangle. A state ρ\rho of SS, pure or mixed, is a positive operator of unit trace on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S: ρ≥0,tr⁡ρ=1.\rho \geq 0, \qquad \operatorname{tr} \rho = 1 .(2)✦

An ensemble ℰ={pi,|ψi⟩}i=1n\mathcal{E} = \{p_i, \lvert\psi_i\rangle\}_{i=1}^{n} of pure states of SS is a finite family of pure states |ψi⟩\lvert\psi_i\rangle of SS with probabilities pip_i that are nonnegative and sum to one.✦ The density operator ρℰ\rho_{\mathcal{E}} of an ensemble ℰ={pi,|ψi⟩}i=1n\mathcal{E} = \{p_i, \lvert\psi_i\rangle\}_{i=1}^{n} of pure states of SS is the operator ∑i=1npi|ψi⟩⟨ψi|\sum_{i=1}^{n} p_i \, \lvert\psi_i\rangle\langle\psi_i\rvert on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S.✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let SS be a quantum system. Every state of SS arises from an ensemble: for an operator TT on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, T≥0andtr⁡T=1⇒T=ρℰfor some ensemble ℰ of pure states of S.T \geq 0 \ \text{and} \ \operatorname{tr} T = 1 \quad \Longrightarrow \quad T = \rho_{\mathcal{E}} \ \text{for some ensemble $\mathcal{E}$ of pure states of $S$.}(3)✦ More precisely, for an operator TT on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, T≥0andtr⁡T=1⇔T=ρℰfor some ensemble ℰ of pure states of S.T \geq 0 \ \text{and} \ \operatorname{tr} T = 1 \quad \Longleftrightarrow \quad T = \rho_{\mathcal{E}} \ \text{for some ensemble $\mathcal{E}$ of pure states of $S$.}(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the states of a quantum system SS with a finite dimensional state space and over the ensembles of pure states of SS, each with its density operator (1).

The library proves that both constructions give states of SS: the projector |ψ⟩⟨ψ|\lvert\psi\rangle\langle\psi\rvert onto a unit vector is positive with unit trace, and so is ρℰ\rho_{\mathcal{E}}, a sum of such projectors with nonnegative weights that sum to one.
