The Exercise
Two qubits are in one of the four Bell states , labelled by two bits and . Alice holds the first qubit and measures an observable on it, leaving the second untouched, so that the observable of the pair is , with the identity on the second qubit. The exercise is to show that the expectation value does not depend on and .✦
A Quantum System
A quantum system is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two systems and is the system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of and .✦ The qubit is the two level system whose state space is itself, with its standard inner product, and the two qubit system is the composite of the qubit with itself.
A pure state of a system is a unit vector in the state space of , .✦ For a bit , the basis state of the qubit is the pure state whose vector is the standard basis vector of .✦ For pure states of and of , the product is the pure state of whose vector is .✦ We write for the product of two basis states.
The Bell States
For bits and , the Bell vector is the vector of the two qubit system (1)✦ where is the other bit. The Bell state is the pure state of the two qubit system whose vector is .✦
Observables and Expectation Values
An observable of a system is a self adjoint operator on the state space of , .✦ The identity observable of is the observable whose operator is the identity on the state space of .✦ For an observable of and an observable of , the observable of the composite system is the one whose operator is the tensor product of the operators of and .✦ The expectation value of an observable of in a pure state of is the real number (2)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be an observable of the qubit, and let , , , be bits. The observable of the two qubit system has the same expectation value in the Bell states and : (3)✦
What Is Checked
The claim (3) is stated over the Bell states built on the vectors (1) and over the expectation value (2) of the observable , formed from and the identity observable of the second qubit.
About these constructions the library proves that every Bell vector has unit norm, so that is a pure state, and that the vector of a product of two pure states has unit norm, the norm of a product vector being the product of the norms. It also proves that the tensor product of two self adjoint operators is self adjoint, which makes an observable.
