Exercise 12.30 - An upper bound on the entropy of a distribution concentrated on one string

A sharply peaked distribution has little entropy.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

A random variable XX takes its values among the 22n2^{2n} strings of 2n2n bits, with n≥1n \ge 1. It equals one particular string x0x_0 with probability 1−2−s1 - 2^{-s}, for a real s>0s > 0, and each of the other 22n−12^{2n} - 1 strings with one and the same probability, so that together they carry the remaining 2−s2^{-s}. This is the spike distribution: a spike at x0x_0, sharper the larger ss is. The exercise asks for an upper bound on the Shannon entropy of XX in terms of nn and ss.

The Entropy of the Spike

The entropy Hn,sH_{n,s} of the spike distribution on strings of 2n2n bits is its Shannon entropy in bits, the real number Hn,s=−(1−2−s)log⁡2(1−2−s)−2−slog⁡22−s22n−1.H_{n,s} = -\left(1 - 2^{-s}\right) \log_2\!\left(1 - 2^{-s}\right) - 2^{-s} \log_2 \frac{2^{-s}}{2^{2n} - 1}.(1)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let s>0s > 0 be real. Then the entropy of the spike distribution satisfies Hn,s<(2n+s+1ln⁡2)2−s.H_{n,s} < \left(2n + s + \frac{1}{\ln 2}\right) 2^{-s}.(2)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over one quantity, the entropy Hn,sH_{n,s} of the spike distribution given by (1). What the library proves about Hn,sH_{n,s} is the bound (2).
