The Exercise
Alice prepares a qubit in one of six states. She picks one of the Pauli operators , and and a bit , and sends the eigenstate of that operator with eigenvalue if and if . Bob measures the qubit in the eigenbasis of one of the three operators. When his choice agrees with Alice’s, he obtains her bit with certainty.✦ When it does not, each of his outcomes is as likely for as for , and his result tells him nothing about her bit.✦
A Qubit and Its Observables
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space✦. The qubit is the system whose state space is .✦
A pure state of is a vector of unit norm in the state space of .✦ A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of .✦ Each pure state determines the state of , the projector onto .✦
The Pauli matrices are (1) and for a real vector the matrix is .✦
An observable on is a self adjoint operator on the state space of , .✦ Since is Hermitian, the Pauli observable is the observable on the qubit with this matrix as its operator.✦ The observables , and are the Pauli observables for the unit vectors , and .
Label the three bases of the exercise by and write for the observable of basis , with , and .✦
Six States
The computational basis kets of are the standard basis vectors and ✦, and the basis states and of the qubit are the pure states with these vectors.✦ With the normalization , four more pure states of the qubit, , , and , have as their vectors the columns (2) For a basis and a bit , Alice’s encoding state is the pure state of the qubit given by (3)✦
A pure state of is an eigenstate of an observable on with eigenvalue , a real number, when .✦ To the bit belongs the sign .✦
Measurements
A measurement on with a finite set of outcomes is a family of operators on the state space of , one for each outcome , satisfying the completeness relation (4)✦ The positive operator valued measure of a measurement on consists of the positive operators , the effects of the measurement.✦ Measuring on a state of gives the outcome with a probability given by the Born rule, (5)✦
Let be an observable with . The projectors of onto its eigenspaces of eigenvalue and are (6) The sign measurement of is the measurement on with two outcomes, for the eigenvalue and for .✦
Each squares to the identity, (7)✦
Bob’s measurement in basis is the sign measurement of .✦ We write for the probability (5) of the outcome when is performed on the state of a pure state .
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let and be bases and , and bits. The state is an eigenstate of with eigenvalue , (8)✦ and the measurement in its own basis gives the outcome with probability one, (9)✦ If , the measurement in basis gives each outcome with the same probability for both bits, (10)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the six states of (3), the observables and their eigenstates, and the measurements with the Born probabilities (5) of their outcomes on the states .
About these constructions the library proves (7) for each , so that the projectors (6) of satisfy the completeness relation (4) and is a measurement. It also proves that each of the six vectors in (3) has unit norm, and that the projector onto a unit vector is a density operator, so that each is a state.
