The Exercise
Alice and Bob share a pure state of two systems, on her side and on his. They want to turn it into another pure state of the same two systems by local operations and classical communication (LOCC): each acts only on their own system, and they may tell each other what their measurements gave. The exercise is to show that no such protocol raises the Schmidt number: if can be turned into , the Schmidt number of is at most that of .✦
The library states the exercise for pure states of a composite system and carries out the conversion on Alice’s side alone, by one measurement on acting on her reduced state, the state of left after is traced out.
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two quantum systems and is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of the state spaces of and .✦
A pure state of a quantum system is a unit vector in the state space of .✦ A state of , pure or mixed, is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of .✦ Each pure state of determines the state of , the rank one projector onto .✦
The reduced state on of a state of is the state of obtained by tracing out against the standard orthonormal basis of the state space of , (1)✦ For a pure state of , Alice’s reduced state is .
The Schmidt Number
The coefficient operator of a pure state of , expanded in the standard orthonormal basis of with each in the state space of , is the linear operator from the state space of to that of with (2)✦
The Schmidt number of a pure state of is the number of its nonzero Schmidt coefficients, which are the singular values of its coefficient operator: (3)✦
Conversion by LOCC
A measurement on a quantum system with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators on the state space of , one for each outcome , that satisfies the completeness relation (4)✦
A state of a quantum system is convertible by LOCC to a state of , written , when a measurement on leaves in whatever its outcome: there is a probability distribution on the outcomes, and , with the probability of outcome , such that (5)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let and be pure states of a composite system such that Alice’s reduced state is convertible by LOCC to . Then (6)✦ If moreover and for natural numbers and , then (7)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over pure states of the composite system , the states they determine and their reduced states on , the conversion by a measurement on , and the Schmidt number read from the coefficient operator .
About these constructions the library proves that the projector onto a unit vector is a density operator, so that is a state of , and that the partial trace of a density operator is again a density operator, so that is a state of .
