Exercise 12.23 - The distillable entanglement of a pure state's reduced state is at most its von Neumann entropy

Distillable entanglement bounded by the reduced state’s entropy.

The Exercise

Two systems AA and BB share a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle, and ρψ\rho_\psi is the state of AA alone. Copies of ρψ\rho_\psi can be converted by local operations and classical communication (LOCC) into states close to maximally mixed ones; the distillable entanglement D(ρψ)D(\rho_\psi) is the best rate at which this can be done, per copy, in the limit of many copies. Exercise 12.23 is to show that this rate cannot exceed the von Neumann entropy S(ρψ)S(\rho_\psi).✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system AA is a physical system whose state space ℋA\mathcal{H}_A is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of AA is a positive operator of unit trace on ℋA\mathcal{H}_A; such an operator is called a density operator.✦ A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of AA is a unit vector in ℋA\mathcal{H}_A, and the state it determines is the projector |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| onto that vector.

The composite system A⊗BA \otimes B of two quantum systems AA and BB is the quantum system whose state space is ℋA⊗ℋB\mathcal{H}_A \otimes \mathcal{H}_B.✦ The reduced state on AA of a state ρ\rho of A⊗BA \otimes B is the state tr⁡Bρ\operatorname{tr}_B \rho of AA given by the partial trace over BB.✦ The reduced state ρψ\rho_\psi on AA of a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of A⊗BA \otimes B is ρψ=tr⁡B|ψ⟩⟨ψ|.\rho_\psi = \operatorname{tr}_B |\psi\rangle\langle\psi| .(1)

The von Neumann entropy of a state ρ\rho of AA is S(ρ)=−tr⁡(ρlog⁡ρ),S(\rho) = -\operatorname{tr}(\rho \log \rho),(2)✦ with log\log the natural logarithm here and below.

Many Copies

The composite system ⨂iAi\bigotimes_i A_i of a finite family of quantum systems AiA_i is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of the spaces ℋAi\mathcal{H}_{A_i}; the system A⊗mA^{\otimes m} of mm copies of AA is the composite of mm factors all equal to AA. The product state ⨂iρi\bigotimes_i \rho_i of states ρi\rho_i of the AiA_i is the state of ⨂iAi\bigotimes_i A_i given by the tensor product of the operators ρi\rho_i.✦ Taking all mm factors equal to a state ρ\rho of AA gives the product state ρ⊗m\rho^{\otimes m} of A⊗mA^{\otimes m}.✦

Distillation

A measurement on AA with a finite set of outcomes is a family of operators MjM_j on ℋA\mathcal{H}_A, one for each outcome jj, satisfying the completeness relation ∑jMj†Mj=I\sum_j M_j^\dagger M_j = I.✦ A state ρ\rho of AA converts to a state σ\sigma of AA by LOCC, written ρ⇝σ\rho \rightsquigarrow \sigma, when some measurement on AA leaves the system in σ\sigma whatever its outcome: outcome jj occurs with a probability pjp_j, the pjp_j being nonnegative and summing to one, and MjρMj†=pjσfor every outcome j.M_j \rho M_j^\dagger = p_j\, \sigma \qquad \text{for every outcome } j.(3)✦

The trace distance between two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of AA is D(ρ,σ)=12tr⁡|ρ−σ|.D(\rho, \sigma) = \tfrac{1}{2} \operatorname{tr} |\rho - \sigma| .(4)✦

The rank of a state μ\mu of AA is the dimension of the range of μ\mu.✦ A state μ\mu is maximally mixed on KK dimensions when it has rank KK and entropy S(μ)=log⁡KS(\mu) = \log K.✦

A real number RR is an achievable distillation rate for a state ρ\rho of AA when, for every number of copies mm, there are a natural number KmK_m and states σm\sigma_m and μm\mu_m of A⊗mA^{\otimes m} with ρ⊗m⇝σm\rho^{\otimes m} \rightsquigarrow \sigma_m and μm\mu_m maximally mixed on KmK_m dimensions, such that, as m→∞m \to \infty, D(σm,μm)→0,log⁡Kmm→R.D(\sigma_m, \mu_m) \to 0, \qquad \frac{\log K_m}{m} \to R .(5)✦ The distillable entanglement of ρ\rho is the supremum of its achievable rates, D(ρ)=sup⁡{R:R is an achievable distillation rate for ρ}.D(\rho) = \sup \{ R : R \text{ is an achievable distillation rate for } \rho \} .(6)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let AA and BB be quantum systems and |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle a pure state of A⊗BA \otimes B, with reduced state ρψ\rho_\psi on AA as in (1). Then D(ρψ)≤S(ρψ).D(\rho_\psi) \le S(\rho_\psi) .(7)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the reduced state (1) of a pure state of A⊗BA \otimes B and two numbers attached to it: its von Neumann entropy (2) and its distillable entanglement (6).

The library proves that the projector onto a unit vector is a density operator and that the partial trace of a density operator is again one, so ρψ\rho_\psi is a state of AA. It proves the same of a tensor product of density operators, which makes ρ⊗m\rho^{\otimes m} a state of A⊗mA^{\otimes m} for every state ρ\rho of AA.
