Exercise 10.40 - Every element of the Pauli normalizer, up to a global phase, as a circuit of quadratically many Hadamard, phase and controlled NOT gates

Each normalizer gate is a short Clifford circuit up to phase.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Take a register of nn qubits and a unitary gate UU that, under conjugation, sends every Pauli operator on the register, phase included, to a Pauli operator. The exercise is to build UU, up to a global phase, from Hadamard gates, phase gates and controlled NOT (CNOT) gates, with a number of gates of order n2n^2. On a single qubit, Hadamard and phase gates are enough.

The library states both claims.

The Pauli Group

The Pauli matrices σ0,σ1,σ2,σ3\sigma_0, \sigma_1, \sigma_2, \sigma_3 are the four complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices, with rows and columns indexed by {0,1}\{0,1\}, given by the identity and the matrices XX, YY and ZZ: σ0=I,σ1=X=(0110),σ2=Y=(0−ii0),σ3=Z=(100−1).\sigma_0 = I, \qquad \sigma_1 = X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad \sigma_2 = Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad \sigma_3 = Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(1)✦

For a choice a=(a1,…,an)∈{0,1,2,3}na = (a_1, \dots, a_n) \in \{0,1,2,3\}^n of one Pauli matrix per qubit, the Pauli string σa1⊗⋯⊗σan\sigma_{a_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{a_n} is the operator on the nn qubits whose matrix, with rows and columns indexed by bit strings x,y∈{0,1}nx, y \in \{0,1\}^n, has the entries (σa1⊗⋯⊗σan)xy=∏k=1n(σak)xkyk.(\sigma_{a_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{a_n})_{xy} = \prod_{k=1}^{n} (\sigma_{a_k})_{x_k y_k}.(2)✦

The Pauli group GnG_n on nn qubits consists of the operators g=isσa1⊗⋯⊗σan,g = i^s \, \sigma_{a_1} \otimes \cdots \otimes \sigma_{a_n},(3)✦ each fixed by its phase power ss, an integer modulo 44, and its Pauli string aa. The phase isi^s is ii raised to the representative of ss in {0,1,2,3}\{0,1,2,3\}, one of the four fourth roots of unity.✦

The Pauli normalizer N(Gn)N(G_n) is the set of unitary 2n×2n2^n \times 2^n matrices UU on the nn qubits such that for every g∈Gng \in G_n there is a g′∈Gng' \in G_n with UgU†=g′.U g U^\dagger = g'.(4)✦

Clifford Circuits

An elementary Clifford gate on a register of nn qubits, whose wires 1,…,n1, \dots, n carry the qubits one each, is a Hadamard gate HH on a wire jj, a phase gate SS on a wire jj, or a CNOT with control wire cc and target wire tt distinct from cc.✦ The matrix of a Hadamard or phase gate acts as HH or SS on qubit jj, that of a CNOT acts as CNOT on qubits cc and tt, and each acts as the identity on the remaining qubits.✦

A Clifford circuit γ\gamma on the register is a finite sequence γ1,…,γm\gamma_1, \dots, \gamma_m of elementary Clifford gates, of length |γ|=m|\gamma| = m.✦ Its matrix UγU_\gamma is the product of the matrices of its gates, the last gate acting first: Uγ=Uγ1Uγ2⋯Uγm.U_\gamma = U_{\gamma_1} U_{\gamma_2} \cdots U_{\gamma_m}.(5)

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let UU be an element of the Pauli normalizer N(Gn)N(G_n) on nn qubits. Then there are a Clifford circuit γ\gamma on the nn qubits and a complex number λ\lambda with |λ|=1|\lambda| = 1 such that U=λUγ,|γ|≤9n2+105n.U = \lambda \, U_\gamma, \qquad |\gamma| \le 9n^2 + 105n.(6)✦

Theorem 2. Let UU be an element of the Pauli normalizer N(G1)N(G_1) on one qubit. Then there are a Clifford circuit γ\gamma on that qubit and a complex number λ\lambda with |λ|=1|\lambda| = 1 such that U=λUγ.U = \lambda \, U_\gamma.(7)✦

What Is Checked

Both theorems are stated over the Pauli normalizer (4), built on the Pauli group (3) and the Pauli matrices (1), and over the matrix (5) of a circuit of Hadamard, phase and CNOT gates together with its length.
