Exercise 10.39 - What conjugation by the phase gate does to the Pauli matrices XX and ZZ

The phase gate carries XX to YY and leaves ZZ fixed.

The Exercise

A single qubit has the computational basis states |0⟩|0\rangle and |1⟩|1\rangle, and in that basis its operators are two by two complex matrices. A unitary UU moves an operator AA to UAU†U A U^\dagger. The exercise takes the phase gate SS for UU and asks what this conjugation makes of the Pauli matrices XX and ZZ.

The Pauli Matrices and the Phase Gate

The Pauli matrices XX, YY and ZZ of a qubit are the two by two complex matrices, with rows and columns labelled by the basis states |0⟩|0\rangle and |1⟩|1\rangle, X=(0110),Y=(0−ii0),Z=(100−1).X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(1)

The phase gate SS is the diagonal two by two complex matrix that leaves |0⟩|0\rangle unchanged and multiplies |1⟩|1\rangle by the imaginary unit ii, S=diag⁡(1,i)=(100i).S = \operatorname{diag}(1, i) = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & i \end{pmatrix}.(2)✦ Its adjoint S†S^\dagger is the conjugate transpose, diag⁡(1,−i)\operatorname{diag}(1, -i).

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let SS be the phase gate (2) and XX, YY, ZZ the Pauli matrices (1). Then conjugation by SS takes XX to YY, SXS†=Y,S X S^\dagger = Y,(3)✦ and leaves ZZ fixed, SZS†=Z.S Z S^\dagger = Z.(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the four matrices XX, YY, ZZ and SS, each given by its entries in (1) and (2), with S†S^\dagger the conjugate transpose of SS.

About these matrices the library states the two identities (3) and (4) as equalities of two by two complex matrices.
