Theorem 9.2 - The trace distance between two states cannot grow under a quantum channel

A quantum channel never increases the trace distance.

The Theorem

Theorem 9.2 of the book concerns two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of one quantum system, both sent through the same quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E}: the noise of a transmission line, say, acting in the same way on whichever state enters it. After the channel, the trace distance between ℰ(ρ)\mathcal{E}(\rho) and ℰ(σ)\mathcal{E}(\sigma) is at most the trace distance between ρ\rho and σ\sigma.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦

Trace Distance

The trace distance D(ρ,σ)D(\rho,\sigma) between two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is half the trace norm of their difference, D(ρ,σ)=12∥ρ−σ∥1=12∑i|λi|,D(\rho,\sigma) = \frac{1}{2}\,\|\rho-\sigma\|_1 = \frac{1}{2}\sum_i |\lambda_i| ,(1)✦ where λi\lambda_i runs over the eigenvalues of the operator ρ−σ\rho-\sigma.

Quantum Channels

A quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on SS is a map on the states of SS that is the restriction to states of a linear map Φ\Phi on the operators on the state space of SS, where Φ\Phi is completely positive and preserves the trace: ℰ(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ,trΦ(A)=trAfor every operator A.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \quad \text{for every state } \rho, \qquad \mathrm{tr}\,\Phi(A) = \mathrm{tr}\,A \quad \text{for every operator } A .(2)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let SS be a quantum system, ℰ\mathcal{E} a quantum channel on SS, and ρ\rho and σ\sigma two states of SS. Then D(ℰ(ρ),ℰ(σ))≤D(ρ,σ).D\big(\mathcal{E}(\rho),\mathcal{E}(\sigma)\big) \le D(\rho,\sigma) .(3)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over a quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on a quantum system SS, in the sense of (2), two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS, and the trace distance (1).
