Lemma 9.5 - The trace norm of an operator is the largest modulus of its trace against a unitary

The trace norm as a maximum over unitaries.

The Lemma

Take an operator AA on the state space EE of a quantum system, a finite-dimensional inner product space, and multiply it by a unitary operator UU on the same space. The trace tr⁡(AU)\operatorname{tr}(AU) is a number whose modulus changes with UU. Lemma 9.5 bounds it: |tr⁡(AU)|\lvert \operatorname{tr}(AU) \rvert never exceeds the sum of the singular values of AA, its trace norm, and a suitable choice of UU reaches that bound.

The Trace Norm

Let EE and FF be finite-dimensional inner product spaces, and let dd be the dimension of EE. The singular values s1(T)≥⋯≥sd(T)≥0s_1(T) \geq \cdots \geq s_d(T) \geq 0 of a linear map TT from EE to FF are the square roots of the eigenvalues of T†TT^\dagger T, and the trace norm ∥T∥1\|T\|_1 of TT is their sum, ∥T∥1=∑i=1dsi(T).\|T\|_1 = \sum_{i=1}^{d} s_i(T).(1)✦ For an operator AA on EE, a linear map of EE to itself, the trace norm ∥A∥1\|A\|_1 is the sum (1) over the singular values of AA.✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let AA be an operator on a finite-dimensional inner product space EE, and let UU range over the unitary operators on EE. Then ∥A∥1=maxU|tr⁡(AU)|.\|A\|_1 = \max_{U} \, \lvert \operatorname{tr}(AU) \rvert .(2)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the trace norm of an operator on EE, the sum (1) of its singular values, and over the unitary operators on EE with the trace of AUAU. What the library proves about these constructions is (2).
