Exercise 9.18 - The angle between two states, the arccosine of their fidelity, does not grow under a quantum channel

A channel never widens the angle between two states.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

Two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of a quantum system pass through the same quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E}. The exercise is to show that the angle between the outputs ℰ(ρ)\mathcal{E}(\rho) and ℰ(σ)\mathcal{E}(\sigma) is never larger than the angle between ρ\rho and σ\sigma.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦

Fidelity and Angle

The fidelity of two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is the nonnegative real number F(ρ,σ)=tr⁡ρσρ,F(\rho,\sigma) = \operatorname{tr}\sqrt{\sqrt{\rho}\,\sigma\sqrt{\rho}},(1)✦ where the trace is over the state space of SS and every square root is the positive square root of a positive operator, taken eigenvalue by eigenvalue.

The angle between two states ρ\rho and σ\sigma of SS is the arccosine of their fidelity, A(ρ,σ)=arccos⁡F(ρ,σ).A(\rho,\sigma) = \arccos F(\rho,\sigma).(2)✦

Quantum Channels

A quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on SS is a map taking states of SS to states of SS that agrees on states with a completely positive, trace preserving linear map Φ\Phi on the operators of the state space of SS: ℰ(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ,tr⁡Φ(X)=tr⁡Xfor every operator X.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \quad \text{for every state } \rho, \qquad \operatorname{tr}\Phi(X) = \operatorname{tr} X \quad \text{for every operator } X.(3)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let ℰ\mathcal{E} be a quantum channel on a quantum system SS, and let ρ\rho and σ\sigma be states of SS. Then A(ℰ(ρ),ℰ(σ))≤A(ρ,σ).A\bigl(\mathcal{E}(\rho),\mathcal{E}(\sigma)\bigr) \le A(\rho,\sigma).(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over a quantum channel on SS in the sense of (3) and over the angle (2) between two states of SS, built from their fidelity (1). What the library proves about these constructions is the inequality (4) for every channel on SS and every pair of states of SS, pure and mixed alike.✦
