Problem 8.3 - Every unital qubit channel is a random unitary channel, and a unital qutrit channel need not be

Unital qubit channels are mixtures of unitaries.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

A device acts on a qubit by picking one of the unitaries U1,…,UnU_1, \dots, U_n at random, UkU_k with probability pkp_k, and applying it. Averaged over the choice, a state ρ\rho goes to ∑kpkUkρUk†\sum_k p_k U_k \rho U_k^\dagger.

The exercise runs the other way. A channel on a qubit that leaves the maximally mixed state I/2I/2 unchanged is always of this kind, a unitary drawn at random. On a qutrit, a three level system, the converse fails: some channel leaves I/3I/3 unchanged and is no mixture of unitaries.✦

Qubits and Qutrits

Both halves concern maps that take the states of a system to its states.

A quantum system SS is a physical object whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The qudit with dd levels is the quantum system whose state space is ℂd\mathbb{C}^d with its standard inner product.✦ The qubit is the two level system, with state space ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2, and the qutrit is the qudit with three levels.

A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦ The maximally mixed state of a system SS whose state space is nonzero, of dimension dd, is the state I/dI/d, where II is the identity operator.✦ A unitary UU of SS is an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=IU^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = I.✦ Under UU a state ρ\rho of SS evolves to UρU†U \rho U^\dagger.✦

Channels

A quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on SS is a map taking states of SS to states of SS that comes from a completely positive linear map Φ\Phi on the operators of the state space of SS, one that preserves the trace of every operator: ℰ(ρ)=Φ(ρ)for every state ρ,tr⁡Φ(A)=tr⁡Afor every operator A.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \Phi(\rho) \ \text{for every state } \rho, \qquad \operatorname{tr} \Phi(A) = \operatorname{tr} A \ \text{for every operator } A.(1)✦

A map ℰ\mathcal{E} taking states of SS to states of SS is unital if it fixes the maximally mixed state of SS, ℰ(I/d)=I/d\mathcal{E}(I/d) = I/d.✦

A random unitary channel CC on SS is a finite family of unitaries U1,…,UnU_1, \dots, U_n of SS together with probabilities p1,…,pnp_1, \dots, p_n, nonnegative and summing to one.✦ It acts on a state ρ\rho of SS by C(ρ)=∑k=1npkUkρUk†.C(\rho) = \sum_{k=1}^{n} p_k \, U_k \rho U_k^\dagger .(2)✦ A map ℰ\mathcal{E} taking states of SS to states of SS is random unitary if some random unitary channel CC on SS agrees with it on every state, C(ρ)=ℰ(ρ)C(\rho) = \mathcal{E}(\rho).✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let ℰ\mathcal{E} be a unital quantum channel on the qubit. Then there are unitaries U1,…,UnU_1, \dots, U_n of the qubit and probabilities p1,…,pnp_1, \dots, p_n with ℰ(ρ)=∑k=1npkUkρUk†for every state ρ.\mathcal{E}(\rho) = \sum_{k=1}^{n} p_k \, U_k \rho U_k^\dagger \quad \text{for every state } \rho .(3)✦

Theorem 2. There is a unital quantum channel ℰ\mathcal{E} on the qutrit such that, for any unitaries U1,…,UnU_1, \dots, U_n of the qutrit and any probabilities p1,…,pnp_1, \dots, p_n, ℰ≠∑k=1npkUk(⋅)Uk†.\mathcal{E} \neq \sum_{k=1}^{n} p_k \, U_k \,(\,\cdot\,)\, U_k^\dagger .(4)✦

What Is Checked

The claims (3) and (4) are stated for the quantum channels (1) that fix the maximally mixed state, against the random unitary channels (2).

The library proves that a unitary carries a state to a state, UρU†U \rho U^\dagger being again positive of unit trace, and that a random unitary channel does too, its output (2) being a mixture of such states with weights pkp_k.
