The Exercise

A measurement on a principal system QQ has its outcomes mm in a finite set, and the outcome mm acts on QQ by a quantum operation ℰm\mathcal{E}_m. The operations are given by operation elements: operators EσE_\sigma on the state space of QQ, one for each index σ\sigma of a finite set, with ∑σEσ†Eσ=1\sum_\sigma E_\sigma^\dagger E_\sigma = 1, and a map oo that assigns to each index its outcome, so that the elements of ℰm\mathcal{E}_m are the EσE_\sigma with o(σ)=mo(\sigma) = m.

The exercise builds this measurement from a unitary and a projective measurement. An environment Env\mathrm{Env} with an orthonormal basis bσb_\sigma, one vector for each index, starts in a unit vector e0e_0 and interacts with QQ through a unitary UU that writes the index of the operation element acting on QQ into the environment as bσb_\sigma. The environment is then measured with the projectors PmP_m onto the basis vectors of outcome mm. The task is to show that, for QQ in a state ρ\rho, the outcome mm occurs with probability Tr⁡ℰm(ρ)\operatorname{Tr}\mathcal{E}_m(\rho) and leaves QQ in the state ℰm(ρ)/Tr⁡ℰm(ρ)\mathcal{E}_m(\rho)/\operatorname{Tr}\mathcal{E}_m(\rho).

In the library UU is one fixed unitary of the joint system of QQ and Env\mathrm{Env} built from these data, and its action on QQ with the environment in e0e_0 is part of the claim, beside the probability and the state after the outcome.

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space ℋS\mathcal{H}_S is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system S⊗TS \otimes T of two systems SS and TT is the system whose state space is the tensor product ℋS⊗ℋT\mathcal{H}_S \otimes \mathcal{H}_T.✦

A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, a density operator.✦ A pure state of SS is a unit vector ψ\psi in ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, and it determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ|\lvert\psi\rangle\langle\psi\rvert of SS, the projector onto ψ\psi. The product state ρ⊗τ\rho \otimes \tau of a state ρ\rho of SS and a state τ\tau of TT is the state of S⊗TS \otimes T given by the tensor product of the operators ρ\rho and τ\tau.✦

A unitary UU of SS is an operator on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = 1, and it evolves a state ρ\rho of SS into the state UρU†U \rho U^\dagger. A linear isometry of ℋS\mathcal{H}_S onto itself is a unitary of SS.✦

Measurements

A measurement on SS with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators MmM_m on ℋS\mathcal{H}_S, one for each outcome mm, with ∑mMm†Mm=1\sum_m M_m^\dagger M_m = 1.✦ Performed on a state ρ\rho of SS, it gives the outcome mm with the probability p(m)p(m) that the Born rule assigns through the positive operator valued measure (POVM) with elements Mm†MmM_m^\dagger M_m, and when p(m)≠0p(m) \neq 0 it leaves SS in the state ρm\rho_m after the outcome: p(m)=Tr⁡(MmρMm†)=Tr⁡(Mm†Mmρ),ρm=MmρMm†p(m).p(m) = \operatorname{Tr}(M_m \rho M_m^\dagger) = \operatorname{Tr}(M_m^\dagger M_m \rho), \qquad \rho_m = \frac{M_m \rho M_m^\dagger}{p(m)} .(1)

A measurement with operators MmM_m on TT is also a measurement on S⊗TS \otimes T, with operators 1S⊗Mm1_S \otimes M_m, the measurement of the second factor alone.✦ The reduced state Tr⁡Tρ\operatorname{Tr}_T \rho of a state ρ\rho of S⊗TS \otimes T is the state of SS obtained by tracing out TT.✦

The Model

The environment block measurement is the measurement on Env\mathrm{Env} whose operator for the outcome mm is the projector onto the span of the basis vectors bσb_\sigma with o(σ)=mo(\sigma) = m, Pm=∑σ:o(σ)=m|bσ⟩⟨bσ|.P_m = \sum_{\sigma \,:\, o(\sigma) = m} \lvert b_\sigma \rangle\langle b_\sigma \rvert .(2)✦ On Q⊗EnvQ \otimes \mathrm{Env} it is the measurement with operators 1Q⊗Pm1_Q \otimes P_m.✦

The operation ℰm\mathcal{E}_m induced by the outcome mm takes a state ρ\rho of QQ to the operator ℰm(ρ)=∑σ:o(σ)=mEσρEσ†\mathcal{E}_m(\rho) = \sum_{\sigma \,:\, o(\sigma) = m} E_\sigma \rho E_\sigma^\dagger(3)✦ on ℋQ\mathcal{H}_Q.

The joint unitary UU of the model is a unitary of Q⊗EnvQ \otimes \mathrm{Env} fixed by the data, a unitary dilation of the operation elements EσE_\sigma built from e0e_0 and the basis bσb_\sigma: U:ℋQ⊗ℋEnv→ℋQ⊗ℋEnv,U†U=UU†=1.U \colon \mathcal{H}_Q \otimes \mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{Env}} \to \mathcal{H}_Q \otimes \mathcal{H}_{\mathrm{Env}}, \qquad U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = 1 .(4)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let bσb_\sigma, e0e_0, EσE_\sigma and oo be data of the model, UU its joint unitary and ρ\rho a state of QQ, and let ρ′=U(ρ⊗|e0⟩⟨e0|)U†\rho' = U(\rho \otimes \lvert e_0\rangle\langle e_0\rvert)U^\dagger be the state of Q⊗EnvQ \otimes \mathrm{Env} after the interaction. Then UU acts on QQ with the environment in e0e_0 as U(ψ⊗e0)=∑σEσψ⊗bσfor every ψ∈ℋQ,U(\psi \otimes e_0) = \sum_\sigma E_\sigma \psi \otimes b_\sigma \quad \text{for every } \psi \in \mathcal{H}_Q ,(5)✦ the measurement with operators 1Q⊗Pm1_Q \otimes P_m on ρ′\rho' gives the outcome mm with probability p(m)=Tr⁡ℰm(ρ),p(m) = \operatorname{Tr}\mathcal{E}_m(\rho) ,(6)✦ and when p(m)≠0p(m) \neq 0 the reduced state of QQ in the state ρm′\rho'_m after the outcome is Tr⁡Envρm′=ℰm(ρ)Tr⁡ℰm(ρ).\operatorname{Tr}_{\mathrm{Env}} \rho'_m = \frac{\mathcal{E}_m(\rho)}{\operatorname{Tr}\mathcal{E}_m(\rho)} .(7)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the joint unitary UU of (4), the block measurement (2) taken on the environment factor, and the operations (3).

The projectors PmP_m are self adjoint with Pm2=PmP_m^2 = P_m and add up to the identity, ∑mPm=1\sum_m P_m = 1, because the projectors |bσ⟩⟨bσ|\lvert b_\sigma\rangle\langle b_\sigma\rvert add up to the identity. The operators 1Q⊗Pm1_Q \otimes P_m do the same in turn, since the sum passes into the second factor. The projector onto e0e_0 and the product of two states are density operators, and conjugating a density operator by a unitary gives one again, so ρ′\rho' is a state. The state after an outcome of nonzero probability is a density operator, and so is its reduced state.
