The Exercise
A principal system in a state meets an environment in a state . The two start uncorrelated, evolve together under a unitary , and then a general measurement with measurement operators is performed on the pair. Seen from alone, each outcome acts on as a quantum operation . The exercise is to find an operator sum representation of each and to show that outcome occurs with probability .
The library defines and its operation elements for an environment in an arbitrary state, and states both parts of the exercise.
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two quantum systems and is the system whose state space is the tensor product of their state spaces; the principal system and the environment form the composite .✦
A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of , pure or mixed.✦ The product state of a state of and a state of is the state of whose density operator is the tensor product of those of and .✦
A unitary of is an operator on the state space of with .✦ A state of evolves under a unitary of to the state .✦
Measurements
A measurement on with a finite set of outcomes is a family of measurement operators on the state space of , one for each outcome , satisfying the completeness relation (1)✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of a measurement is the family of effects , one for each outcome.✦ The probability of outcome when is performed on a state of is the value at of the distribution its POVM assigns to , given by the Born rule (2)✦ The state left by outcome on , before it is normalized, is the operator on the state space of .✦
The Operation on the Principal System
Given a state of , a unitary of and a measurement on , the operation of outcome sends a state of to the operator on the state space of obtained by tracing out the environment from the state that outcome leaves, before normalization, on the evolved product state : (3)✦
Given a unitary and a measurement on , a finite family of vectors in the state space of , not necessarily normalized, and a fixed orthonormal basis of that space, the operation elements of outcome are the operators on the state space of , one for each and each , acting on a vector of as (4)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a state of , a state of , a unitary of and a measurement on . Performed on , the measurement gives each outcome with probability (5)✦ If moreover for a finite family of vectors in the state space of , then each has the operator sum representation (6)✦ with the operation elements (4).
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the measurement of the evolved product state of , with its probabilities (2), and over the operation (3) with its elements (4).
About these constructions the library proves that the tensor product of two density operators is again positive of unit trace, and that conjugating a density operator by a unitary gives a density operator; together these make a state of . It proves also that each effect is positive and that the effects sum to the identity by (1), so the probabilities form a distribution over the outcomes.
