The Exercise
A quantum operation on a qubit is unital if it maps the identity operator to itself, . A unital operation leaves the maximally mixed state where it is. The exercise asks to show that two of the standard noise channels on a qubit, the depolarizing channel and the phase damping channel, are unital, and that the amplitude damping channel is not.
A Qubit
The library states the three facts together, for a qubit with a fixed computational basis. Let be the state space of the qubit and , its computational basis, with the ground state and the excited state. For in , the projector onto the basis vector is the rank one operator on .✦ The lowering operator of the qubit is the operator on .✦
Three Noise Channels
The amplitude damping channel with damping probability is the quantum operation that sends a linear operator on to (1) where the dagger denotes the adjoint and the operation elements and are the operators on (2)✦ The element describes the loss of one quantum of energy.
The phase damping channel with parameter is the quantum operation that sends a linear operator on to (3)✦ with operation elements and .
The Pauli matrices , and are the two by two complex matrices (4) The depolarizing channel with parameter is the map on two by two complex matrices given by (5)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. For every real , the depolarizing channel maps the two by two identity matrix to itself, (6)✦ For every with , the phase damping channel maps the identity operator on the state space of the qubit to itself, (7)✦ For every damping probability with , the amplitude damping channel does not, (8)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the three channels (1), (3) and (5).
