Exercise 8.13 - A unitary on a qubit moves every Bloch vector by one fixed rotation

Every qubit unitary is a rotation of the Bloch ball.

The Exercise

A state of a qubit is fixed by its Bloch vector, a real vector r→\vec r in three dimensions of length at most one: the density operator is 12(I+r→⋅σ→)\frac12(I + \vec r\cdot\vec\sigma), with σ→\vec\sigma the vector of Pauli matrices. A unitary UU acting on the qubit takes the state ρ\rho to UρU†U\rho U^\dagger, which has a Bloch vector of its own. The exercise asks for the map from the old Bloch vector to the new one: for each UU there is a single rotation RR of three dimensional space that carries every Bloch vector r→\vec r to the Bloch vector Rr→R\vec r of the evolved state.

A Qubit and Its States

A quantum system SS is described by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The qubit is the two level system whose state space is ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 itself, with its standard basis |0⟩|0\rangle, |1⟩|1\rangle.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦

The Pauli matrices are X=(0110),Y=(0−ii0),Z=(100−1).X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(1) For a real vector r→=(r1,r2,r3)\vec r = (r_1, r_2, r_3) in three dimensions, r→⋅σ→\vec r\cdot\vec\sigma is the complex 2×22\times 2 matrix r1X+r2Y+r3Zr_1X + r_2Y + r_3Z, and the Bloch matrix of r→\vec r is 12(I+r→⋅σ→)\frac12(I + \vec r\cdot\vec\sigma): 12(I+r→⋅σ→)=12(1+r3r1−ir2r1+ir21−r3).\tfrac12\left(I + \vec r\cdot\vec\sigma\right) = \frac12\begin{pmatrix} 1 + r_3 & r_1 - i r_2 \\ r_1 + i r_2 & 1 - r_3 \end{pmatrix}.(2) For a vector r→\vec r in the closed unit ball, |r→|2=r12+r22+r32≤1|\vec r|^2 = r_1^2 + r_2^2 + r_3^2 \le 1, the Bloch state ρ(r→)\rho(\vec r) is the state of the qubit whose operator is the Bloch matrix (2) acting on ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2.✦

Unitary Gates

A unitary UU of a quantum system SS, a closed system evolution of SS, is an operator UU on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=IU^\dagger U = UU^\dagger = I.✦ Under UU a state ρ\rho of SS evolves as ρ↦UρU†.\rho \;\longmapsto\; U\rho\,U^\dagger.(3)✦

On the qubit, a unitary 2×22\times 2 complex matrix UU, with U†U=UU†=IU^\dagger U = UU^\dagger = I, gives the single qubit gate UU: the unitary of the qubit whose operator is the linear map of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 that the matrix represents in the standard basis, U|j⟩=∑k=01Ukj|k⟩,j=0,1.U|j\rangle = \sum_{k=0}^{1} U_{kj}\,|k\rangle, \qquad j = 0, 1.(4)✦

The Claim

A rotation of three dimensional space is a real 3×33\times 3 matrix RR with RTR=RRT=IR^{T}R = RR^{T} = I and det⁡R=1\det R = 1; the rotations form the special orthogonal group SO(3)SO(3).

Theorem 1. Let UU be a unitary 2×22\times 2 complex matrix, acting on the qubit as the gate (4). There is a rotation R∈SO(3)R \in SO(3) such that for every real vector r→\vec r with |r→|≤1|\vec r| \le 1 and |Rr→|≤1|R\vec r| \le 1 the gate takes the Bloch state of r→\vec r to the Bloch state of Rr→R\vec r: Uρ(r→)U†=ρ(Rr→).U\rho(\vec r)\,U^\dagger = \rho(R\vec r).(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the single qubit gate (4) of a unitary matrix UU, the evolution (3) of a state under a unitary, the Bloch states ρ(r→)\rho(\vec r) of the qubit and the rotations in SO(3)SO(3).

The library proves that the Bloch matrix of r→\vec r has unit trace and is positive exactly when |r→|≤1|\vec r| \le 1, which makes ρ(r→)\rho(\vec r) a state. Conjugation by a unitary takes a density operator to a density operator, so UρU†U\rho U^\dagger is again a state, and the operator of the gate is unitary because the matrix UU is.
