The Exercise
A closed quantum system evolves by a unitary . A pure state of it can be followed in two ways: as a unit vector , which goes to , or as its density operator , which goes to . The exercise asks to show that both routes end at the same state: the density operator of is .✦
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of , (1)✦ Pure and mixed states alike are states in this sense.
A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of , .✦ The density operator of a pure state of is the state of given by the rank one projector onto , (2)✦
Unitary Evolution
A unitary of , the evolution of as a closed system, is an operator on the state space of with (3)✦ It carries a pure state of to the pure state , (4) Under a state of evolves to the state , (5)
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let be a unitary of a quantum system and a pure state of . Then the density operator of the evolved pure state is the evolution under of the density operator of : (6)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over a unitary of a quantum system and a pure state of .
The library proves that a unitary preserves norms, so that is again a unit vector. It proves as well that the projector onto a unit vector is positive with unit trace, and that conjugating a density operator by a unitary gives a density operator.
