The Exercise
A register of qubits has the computational basis states , one for each string of zeros and ones. The exercise asks for a permutation of these states that leaves in place and carries the other around a single cycle, so that applying it often enough takes any nonzero string to any other. The permutation is to be linear in the bits, with addition modulo , and built from controlled-NOT gates, each flipping one bit when another is . The number of gates should grow no faster than .
The Field with Elements
The library states the exercise for , the finite field with elements, taken as a vector space over , the integers modulo . A basis of over writes each element in exactly one way as (1) and the coefficients are the string of the register; the element is the string of zeros.
The matrix of a linear map of in the basis is the matrix over whose th column holds the coordinates (1) of : (2)
An invertible linear map of permutes its elements.
A permutation of a set is a cycle when the points it moves form a single orbit: some point has , and every point with equals for some integer .
A transvection of size over , for indices and a coefficient , is the matrix (3) where is the identity and has a single entry , in row and column . On a column of coordinates it adds to and leaves the other entries alone. For it is the controlled-NOT gate with control and target , for the identity.
