The Exercise
Two coupled nuclear spins of one half serve as the qubits of a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment. They start in , both spins in . A pulse rotates each spin by about the axis. The pair then evolves for a time under the coupling , where is the Pauli of spin , is the coupling constant and . A last pulse rotates the second spin by about the axis. The exercise is to show that the pair is then in the Bell state .
Two Qubits
A quantum system is given by its state space, a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ Any such space can be taken as the state space of a system, and the qubit is the two level system whose state space is . The composite system of two systems and is the system whose state space is the tensor product of theirs; the two spins form the composite system of two qubits, with state space .✦
A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of .✦ The basis states and of the qubit are the standard basis vectors and of .✦ The product of pure states of and of is the pure state of with vector ; the spins start in .✦
A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of .✦ A pure state of determines the state of , the projector onto its vector.✦
For bits and , the Bell vector of two qubits is (1) with the flip of , and the Bell state is the pure state of two qubits with this vector. The target of the exercise is , the case , of (1).
Observables and Rotations
An observable on is a self adjoint operator on the state space of , .✦ The tensor product of observables of and of is the observable of whose operator is the tensor product of their operators.✦
In the basis the Pauli matrices are (2) For a real vector in three dimensions, the matrix is , and the Pauli observable is the observable of the qubit whose operator has that matrix. The observable is the Pauli observable for the unit vector .✦ The coupling Hamiltonian of the two spins, for a real coupling constant , is the observable of two qubits (3)✦
For a real vector and an angle , the rotation is the complex matrix (4)✦ written when the axis is a unit vector . The rotations about the and axes are , with , and , with .
Unitaries and the Circuit
A unitary of is an operator on the state space of with .✦ It carries a pure state of to the pure state , with vector .✦ For unitaries and of , after is the unitary , first and then ; the identity evolution of is the unitary . The product unitary of unitaries of and of is the unitary of whose operator is the tensor product of their operators.✦ A gate on the first factor alone is , and a gate on the second alone is .
The propagator of an observable of , with Planck’s constant , from time to time is the unitary (5)✦ which carries the state of a system with Hamiltonian at time to its state at , .
The pulse sequence of the exercise is the NMR Bell circuit, the unitary of two qubits (6) where is the propagator (5) of the coupling Hamiltonian (3) with . The two rotations about commute, and the second spin is turned first.
The Claim
Only the product enters the propagator, , which for is .
Theorem 1. Let and be real numbers with , and let be the circuit (6). Then the pure state determines the same state as the Bell state : (7)✦
What Is Checked
The claim is stated over the circuit (6), made of rotation gates on one qubit and the propagator of the coupling Hamiltonian, and over the input and the Bell state , compared through the states they determine.
About these constructions the library proves that every Bell vector (1) is a unit vector, so that is a pure state.✦ Each rotation gate is unitary because its matrix is. The Pauli observables are self adjoint because the matrix is Hermitian, and so is the coupling Hamiltonian, a real multiple of a tensor product of Hermitian operators.
