Exercise 7.31 - The Hadamard matrix as a global phase times a rotation about xˆ\hat x after one about yˆ\hat y

The Hadamard gate as two rotations and a phase.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

The Hadamard gate HH on a single qubit can be built from rotations about the xˆ\hat x and yˆ\hat y axes. A rotation by π/2\pi/2 about yˆ\hat y, followed by a rotation by π\pi about xˆ\hat x, gives HH up to the global phase eiπ/2=ie^{i\pi/2} = i, a factor common to every state and without observable effect.✦

The library states the decomposition for the matrices of the gates, with the rotations built as exponentials of the Pauli matrices defined below.

Gates and Rotations of a Qubit

The Hadamard matrix HH is the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrix H=12(111−1).H = \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}} \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 1 & -1 \end{pmatrix}.(1)✦

The Pauli matrices XX, YY and ZZ are the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrices X=(0110),Y=(0−ii0),Z=(100−1),X = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Y = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & -i \\ i & 0 \end{pmatrix}, \qquad Z = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & -1 \end{pmatrix},(2) with ii the imaginary unit.

Let σ→=(X,Y,Z)\vec\sigma = (X, Y, Z) be the Pauli vector. For a real vector n→=(nx,ny,nz)\vec n = (n_x, n_y, n_z) in three dimensions, the matrix n→⋅σ→\vec n \cdot \vec\sigma is the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrix nxX+nyY+nzZn_x X + n_y Y + n_z Z.✦ The rotation Rn→(θ)R_{\vec n}(\theta) about the axis n→\vec n by a real angle θ\theta is the complex 2×22 \times 2 matrix Rn→(θ)=exp⁡(−iθ2n→⋅σ→).R_{\vec n}(\theta) = \exp\!\left(-\frac{i\theta}{2}\, \vec n \cdot \vec\sigma\right).(3)✦ For a unit vector nˆ\hat n this is the rotation of a qubit by the angle θ\theta about nˆ\hat n.

The rotation Rx(θ)R_x(\theta) by an angle θ\theta about the xˆ\hat x axis is Rnˆ(θ)R_{\hat n}(\theta) with nˆ=(1,0,0)\hat n = (1, 0, 0), and the rotation Ry(θ)R_y(\theta) about the yˆ\hat y axis is Rnˆ(θ)R_{\hat n}(\theta) with nˆ=(0,1,0)\hat n = (0, 1, 0): Rx(θ)=e−iθX/2,Ry(θ)=e−iθY/2.R_x(\theta) = e^{-i\theta X/2}, \qquad R_y(\theta) = e^{-i\theta Y/2}.(4)

The Claim

In a product of gates the one that acts first stands on the right, next to the state.

Theorem 1. The Hadamard matrix HH of (1) and the rotations RxR_x and RyR_y of (4) satisfy H=eiπ/2Rx(π)Ry(π/2).H = e^{i\pi/2}\, R_x(\pi)\, R_y(\pi/2).(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the Hadamard matrix (1) and the rotations RxR_x and RyR_y of (4).
