Exercise 7.18 - The evolution operator on three states, written out entry by entry

The time evolution of an atom coupled to a cavity mode.

The Exercise

An atom with two levels sits in a cavity and exchanges energy with a single mode of the field. Two real numbers fix the model: the detuning δ\delta between the atom and the field, and the coupling strength gg. On the three states |00⟩|00\rangle, |01⟩|01\rangle, |10⟩|10\rangle the Hamiltonian HH of Jaynes and Cummings is a 3×33 \times 3 matrix, and the exercise asks for its time evolution operator e−iHte^{-iHt} at time tt, in units with ℏ=1\hbar = 1, as an explicit matrix whose entries oscillate at the Rabi frequency, and for the phase it puts on |00⟩|00\rangle.

An Atom in a Cavity

The Rabi frequency Ω\Omega of a detuning δ\delta and a coupling gg is the real number Ω=g2+δ2.\Omega = \sqrt{g^2 + \delta^2}.(1)✦

The Hamiltonian HH of Jaynes and Cummings, with detuning δ\delta and coupling gg, is the operator on the span of |00⟩|00\rangle, |01⟩|01\rangle, |10⟩|10\rangle whose matrix in that basis is H=−(δ000δg0g−δ).H = -\begin{pmatrix} \delta & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & \delta & g \\ 0 & g & -\delta \end{pmatrix}.(2)✦

The Rabi unitary U(t)U(t) at time tt, for detuning δ\delta and coupling gg, is the operator on the same three states with matrix U(t)=(eit(δ−Ω)(cosΩt+isinΩt)000cos⁡Ωt+iδΩsin⁡ΩtigΩsin⁡Ωt0igΩsin⁡Ωtcos⁡Ωt−iδΩsin⁡Ωt).U(t) = \begin{pmatrix} e^{it(\delta - \Omega)}\left(\cos \Omega t + i \sin \Omega t\right) & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & \cos \Omega t + i \tfrac{\delta}{\Omega} \sin \Omega t & i \tfrac{g}{\Omega} \sin \Omega t \\ 0 & i \tfrac{g}{\Omega} \sin \Omega t & \cos \Omega t - i \tfrac{\delta}{\Omega} \sin \Omega t \end{pmatrix}.(3)✦

The Claim

The entries of (3) divide by Ω\Omega, which vanishes only when gg and δ\delta are both zero.

Theorem 1. Let δ\delta and gg be real numbers with Ω≠0\Omega \neq 0, and let tt be a real time. Then the exponential of −iHt-iHt, with HH the Hamiltonian (2), is the Rabi unitary (3): e−iHt=U(t).e^{-iHt} = U(t).(4)✦

Theorem 2. For all real δ\delta, gg and tt, the entry of the Rabi unitary on |00⟩|00\rangle is ⟨00|U(t)|00⟩=eiδt.\langle 00 | U(t) | 00 \rangle = e^{i\delta t}.(5)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the Hamiltonian HH of (2), given by its matrix on the three states, and over the Rabi unitary U(t)U(t) of (3), whose entries are built from the Rabi frequency (1).
