Exercise 7.10 - Opposite beamsplitters cancel, and around a phase shift they rotate a photon's dual rail qubit

An interferometer turns a phase shift into a qubit rotation.

The Exercise

A single photon is shared between two optical modes. With the photon in the second mode it encodes the logical state |0L⟩|0_L\rangle, with the photon in the first mode the logical state |1L⟩|1_L\rangle, and a superposition c0|0L⟩+c1|1L⟩c_0|0_L\rangle + c_1|1_L\rangle is a qubit carried by one photon. A beamsplitter of angle θ\theta mixes the two modes. Send the photon through a beamsplitter of angle π/4\pi/4, shift the phase of the second mode by φ\varphi, and recombine the modes at a beamsplitter of angle −π/4-\pi/4: this is the interferometer of Mach and Zehnder.✦ The exercise is to show that a beamsplitter of angle −θ-\theta undoes one of angle θ\theta, and to compute the output of the interferometer for the input c0|0L⟩+c1|1L⟩c_0|0_L\rangle + c_1|1_L\rangle. On the qubit the photon carries, the interferometer is the rotation Rx(φ)R_x(\varphi) about the xx axis, up to the global phase eiφ/2e^{i\varphi/2}.✦

A Photon in Two Modes

A quantum system SS is a physical object whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system S⊗TS \otimes T of two quantum systems SS and TT is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of their state spaces.✦ The qubit is the two level system with state space ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2; the standard basis vectors of ℂ2\mathbb{C}^2 are its computational basis states |0⟩|0\rangle and |1⟩|1\rangle.

A pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of a system SS is a vector of unit norm in the state space of SS, determined physically up to a global phase.✦ For pure states |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS and |χ⟩|\chi\rangle of TT, the product |ψ⟩⊗|χ⟩|\psi\rangle \otimes |\chi\rangle is the pure state of S⊗TS \otimes T whose vector is the tensor product of the two vectors.✦

The photon lives in the composite system of two qubits, one qubit for each mode. The logical zero |0L⟩|0_L\rangle is the pure state |01⟩=|0⟩⊗|1⟩|01\rangle = |0\rangle \otimes |1\rangle of two qubits; the logical one |1L⟩|1_L\rangle is the pure state |10⟩=|1⟩⊗|0⟩|10\rangle = |1\rangle \otimes |0\rangle. For complex numbers c0c_0 and c1c_1, the dual rail superposition is the vector c0|0L⟩+c1|1L⟩c_0\,|0_L\rangle + c_1\,|1_L\rangle(1)✦ in the state space of the two qubits. When |c0|2+|c1|2=1|c_0|^2 + |c_1|^2 = 1, the dual rail state with amplitudes c0c_0 and c1c_1 is the pure state with this vector, the general state of a single photon in the two modes.✦

Beamsplitters and the Interferometer

A unitary UU of a quantum system SS is a closed system evolution of SS: an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=1U^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = 1.✦ It carries a pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of SS to the pure state U|ψ⟩U|\psi\rangle.✦ For two unitaries UU and VV of SS, the unitary UU after VV is the composite UVUV, first VV and then UU, and the identity evolution of SS is the unitary 11. For unitaries UU of SS and VV of TT, the product unitary U⊗VU \otimes V is the unitary of S⊗TS \otimes T whose operator is the tensor product of the two operators.✦

The projector Π\Pi onto the dual rail plane, spanned by |0L⟩|0_L\rangle and |1L⟩|1_L\rangle, and the generator GG of rotations in that plane are the operators on two qubits Π=|0L⟩⟨0L|+|1L⟩⟨1L|,G=|1L⟩⟨0L|−|0L⟩⟨1L|.\Pi = |0_L\rangle\langle 0_L| + |1_L\rangle\langle 1_L| , \qquad G = |1_L\rangle\langle 0_L| - |0_L\rangle\langle 1_L| .(2) For a real angle θ\theta, the dual rail beamsplitter B(θ)B(\theta) is the unitary of two qubits with operator B(θ)=1+(cos⁡θ−1)Π+sin⁡θG.B(\theta) = 1 + (\cos\theta - 1)\,\Pi + \sin\theta\, G .(3)✦

The phase shift gate P(α)P(\alpha) of angle α\alpha is the unitary of the qubit diagonal in the computational basis, P(α)=diag(1,eiα)P(\alpha) = \mathrm{diag}(1, e^{i\alpha}).✦ On two qubits it acts on the second qubit, as the product unitary 1⊗P(α)1 \otimes P(\alpha) of the identity evolution of the first qubit with P(α)P(\alpha) on the second.✦ This gate multiplies |0L⟩=|01⟩|0_L\rangle = |01\rangle by eiαe^{i\alpha} and leaves |1L⟩=|10⟩|1_L\rangle = |10\rangle alone, a phase shift of the second mode.

Two beamsplitters in series, of angle θ\theta and then −θ-\theta, form the unitary C(θ)=B(−θ)B(θ)C(\theta) = B(-\theta)\,B(\theta)(4)✦ of two qubits. The interferometer of Mach and Zehnder with phase φ\varphi is the unitary M(φ)=B(−π/4)(1⊗P(φ))B(π/4).M(\varphi) = B(-\pi/4)\,\bigl(1 \otimes P(\varphi)\bigr)\,B(\pi/4) .(5)✦

The Claim

Theorem 1. For every real angle θ\theta, a beamsplitter of angle −θ-\theta after one of angle θ\theta is the identity evolution of the two qubits: C(θ)=1.C(\theta) = 1 .(6)✦

Theorem 2. Let φ\varphi be a real phase, and let c0c_0 and c1c_1 be complex amplitudes with |c0|2+|c1|2=1|c_0|^2 + |c_1|^2 = 1. The interferometer carries the dual rail state c0|0L⟩+c1|1L⟩c_0|0_L\rangle + c_1|1_L\rangle to the dual rail state M(φ)(c0|0L⟩+c1|1L⟩)=12[(eiφ+1)c0+(1−eiφ)c1]|0L⟩+12[(1−eiφ)c0+(eiφ+1)c1]|1L⟩,\begin{aligned} M(\varphi)\bigl(c_0|0_L\rangle + c_1|1_L\rangle\bigr) &= \tfrac12\bigl[(e^{i\varphi} + 1)\,c_0 + (1 - e^{i\varphi})\,c_1\bigr]\,|0_L\rangle \\ &\quad + \tfrac12\bigl[(1 - e^{i\varphi})\,c_0 + (e^{i\varphi} + 1)\,c_1\bigr]\,|1_L\rangle , \end{aligned}(7)✦ which in half angles reads M(φ)(c0|0L⟩+c1|1L⟩)=eiφ/2[cos⁡φ2c0−isin⁡φ2c1]|0L⟩+eiφ/2[−isin⁡φ2c0+cos⁡φ2c1]|1L⟩.\begin{aligned} M(\varphi)\bigl(c_0|0_L\rangle + c_1|1_L\rangle\bigr) &= e^{i\varphi/2}\bigl[\cos\tfrac{\varphi}{2}\,c_0 - i\sin\tfrac{\varphi}{2}\,c_1\bigr]\,|0_L\rangle \\ &\quad + e^{i\varphi/2}\bigl[-i\sin\tfrac{\varphi}{2}\,c_0 + \cos\tfrac{\varphi}{2}\,c_1\bigr]\,|1_L\rangle . \end{aligned}(8)✦

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the composite system of two qubits and its dual rail states (1), and over the beamsplitter (3) built from the projector and the generator of (2). The two circuits it is about are C(θ)C(\theta) of (4) and M(φ)M(\varphi) of (5).

About these constructions the library proves that B(θ)B(\theta) is unitary for every real θ\theta, and that the dual rail superposition has unit norm whenever |c0|2+|c1|2=1|c_0|^2 + |c_1|^2 = 1. It proves the same of both outputs: the amplitudes in (7) and in (8) have squared moduli summing to one, so both are dual rail states. The phase shift gate is unitary, its diagonal entries having unit modulus. Products and tensor products of unitaries are unitary, and a unitary preserves norms, so it carries a pure state to a pure state.
