The Exercise
A box applies one of three unitaries to a qubit, and we do not know which. Each is a reflection about a state of the qubit: about the basis state , about the eigenstate of the Pauli operator , or about the eigenstate of . The box is used once. Two qubits are prepared in the Bell state , the first of them is sent through the box, and the pair is measured in the Bell basis; the outcome of that one measurement is to name the box.
A second question compares the reflections about two states and of one system, when a unitary prepares from .
A Quantum System
A quantum system is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ The composite system of two systems and is the quantum system whose state space is the tensor product of their state spaces.✦
A pure state of is a unit vector in the state space of .✦ A state of is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of , and a pure state gives the state , the projector onto its vector. For pure states of and of , the product is the pure state of whose vector is .✦
The qubit is the quantum system whose state space is itself.✦ For a bit , its basis state is the pure state whose vector is the standard basis vector of .✦ The states and are the pure states of the qubit whose vectors are the columns (1)
The Bell Basis
For bits and , the Bell state is the pure state of the composite system of two qubits whose vector is (2)✦ where is the flip of and and are products of basis states. The four Bell states form the Bell basis, an orthonormal basis of the state space of two qubits indexed by the pairs .✦ The Bell state is the pure state of two qubits whose vector is divided by its norm .✦
Unitaries and Reflections
A unitary of a system is an operator on the state space of with , where is the identity operator of that space.✦ A unitary of carries a pure state of to the pure state of .✦ For unitaries and of , the composite is the unitary of that applies first and then , and the adjoint is the unitary of whose operator is the adjoint of that of .
For a unitary of and a unitary of , the product unitary is the unitary of whose operator is the tensor product of the two.✦ For a unitary of and the identity of , the gate is the unitary of that applies to the first system and leaves the second alone.✦
For a pure state of , the reflection about is the unitary of (3)✦ The three oracles, numbered , and , are the reflections of the qubit about , and : (4)
For , the state of two qubits after the oracle is the pure state obtained from by the gate on the first qubit: (5)✦
The Bell Measurement
A measurement on a system , with a finite set of outcomes, is a family of measurement operators on the state space of , one for each outcome , satisfying the completeness relation .✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of a measurement on is the family of effects , one for each outcome , and the probability of when is performed on a state of is the Born rule value (6)
The projective measurement in an orthonormal basis of is the measurement whose operator for the outcome is the projector .✦ The Bell measurement is the projective measurement of two qubits in the Bell basis: its outcomes are the pairs of bits, and the operator of is .✦
The Bell outcome of the oracle is the pair of bits given by (7)✦
The Claim
Theorem 1. Let , let the oracle act on the first qubit of , and let the Bell measurement be performed on the resulting state . Then for each the Bell outcome of the oracle has probability (8)✦
The three outcomes (7) are distinct, so the one Bell measurement names the box.
Theorem 2. Let be a unitary of a quantum system , and let and be pure states of with . Then the reflections (3) about the two states satisfy (9)✦
What Is Checked
The first claim is stated over the Born probabilities (6) of the Bell measurement on the states (5), each the oracle (4) applied to the first qubit of , at the outcomes (7). The second is stated over the reflection (3), the action of a unitary on a pure state, and the composite and the adjoint of unitaries.
Of these constructions the library proves that each Bell vector (2) has unit norm, that the four are orthonormal, and that their number equals the dimension of the state space of two qubits, so that they form a basis. The projectors onto an orthonormal basis satisfy the completeness relation, the effects are positive and sum to , and is a density operator. The reflection , the product , the composite and the adjoint are unitary, while , the states (1), and the product are unit vectors.
