Exercise 6.3 - The half angle set by the start state of the search, and the sine of the whole angle

The sine of the Grover rotation angle.

The Exercise

A search runs over NN items, MM of which are solutions. Let |α⟩|\alpha\rangle be the normalized uniform superposition of the N−MN-M items that are not solutions, and |β⟩|\beta\rangle that of the MM items that are. The uniform superposition over all NN items is then |ψ⟩=N−MN|α⟩+MN|β⟩.|\psi\rangle = \sqrt{\frac{N-M}{N}}\,|\alpha\rangle + \sqrt{\frac{M}{N}}\,|\beta\rangle .(1) Both amplitudes are nonnegative and their squares add to one, so they are the cosine and the sine of a half angle: cos⁡θ2=N−MN,sin⁡θ2=MN.\cos\frac{\theta}{2} = \sqrt{\frac{N-M}{N}}, \qquad \sin\frac{\theta}{2} = \sqrt{\frac{M}{N}} .(2) Each Grover iteration turns the state through the angle θ\theta in the plane of |α⟩|\alpha\rangle and |β⟩|\beta\rangle, and the exercise asks for sin⁡θ\sin\theta in terms of NN and MM.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let N>0N > 0 and 0≤M≤N0 \le M \le N be real numbers, and let θ\theta be a real angle whose half satisfies (2). Then sin⁡θ=2M(N−M)N.\sin\theta = \frac{2\sqrt{M(N-M)}}{N} .(3)✦

What Is Checked

The sine, cosine and square root are the real ones.
