Exercise 6.17 - How many oracle calls a quantum search needs when several items are marked

A query lower bound for search with several solutions.

Hover over a blue or green term in the text, or a node in the graph, to find it in the other. Select it to read its declaration both in Lean and in words.

The Exercise

An unstructured search runs over NN items, MM of which are marked, with 1≤M≤N1 \le M \le N. The marked set is unknown, and the only access to it is an oracle that flips the sign of the basis states of the marked items. A quantum algorithm prepares a fixed initial state and then alternates calls to the oracle with unitaries of its own; at the end it measures in the computational basis. Show that if the measurement returns a marked item with probability at least one half, whichever MM items are marked, then the algorithm calls the oracle Ω(N/M)\Omega(\sqrt{N/M}) times.✦

A Quantum System

A quantum system SS is a physical system whose state space is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space.✦ A state ρ\rho of SS is a positive operator of unit trace on the state space of SS.✦ A pure state ψ\psi of SS is a vector |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle of unit norm in that space, and it determines the state |ψ⟩⟨ψ||\psi\rangle\langle\psi| of SS, the projector onto |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle. A unitary UU of SS, an evolution of SS as a closed system, is an operator on the state space of SS with U†U=UU†=IU^\dagger U = U U^\dagger = I.✦

A measurement on SS with a finite set of outcomes ι\iota is a family of operators MiM_i on the state space of SS, one for each outcome ii, that satisfies the completeness relation ∑i∈ιMi†Mi=I.\sum_{i \in \iota} M_i^\dagger M_i = I .(1)✦ The positive operator valued measure (POVM) of a measurement {Mi}\{M_i\} on SS is the family of positive operators Ei=Mi†MiE_i = M_i^\dagger M_i, the effects, one for each outcome ii. Performed on a state ρ\rho, the measurement gives the outcome ii with the Born probability p(i)=Tr⁡(MiρMi†)=Tr⁡(Eiρ).p(i) = \operatorname{Tr}\bigl(M_i \rho M_i^\dagger\bigr) = \operatorname{Tr}(E_i \rho) .(2)✦ The projective measurement in an orthonormal basis {|bi⟩}\{|b_i\rangle\} of the state space is the measurement whose operator for the outcome ii is the projector |bi⟩⟨bi||b_i\rangle\langle b_i|.✦

The Search Problem

A quantum search problem on SS with NN items is given by its computational basis, an orthonormal basis {|x⟩}\{|x\rangle\} of the state space of SS whose vectors are labelled by the NN items xx.✦ The search measurement of a quantum search problem on SS is the projective measurement of SS in its computational basis; the outcome xx means that the search returns the item xx.✦

For a set ss of items, the marked projection PsP_s is the orthogonal projector onto the span of the basis vectors |x⟩|x\rangle with x∈sx \in s, and the search oracle for the marked set ss is the unitary Os=I−2PsO_s = I - 2 P_s(3) of SS.

Fix an initial pure state |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle and a sequence of unitaries U0,U1,…U_0, U_1, \dots of SS, the algorithm’s own steps. With a unitary OO in the place of the oracle, the state after kk queries is the pure state |ψk⟩|\psi_k\rangle given by |ψ0⟩=|ψ⟩,|ψj+1⟩=UjO|ψj⟩.|\psi_0\rangle = |\psi\rangle , \qquad |\psi_{j+1}\rangle = U_j \, O \, |\psi_j\rangle .(4)✦ For O=OsO = O_s the pure state |ψk⟩|\psi_k\rangle is written |ψks⟩|\psi_k^s\rangle, the state of SS after kk queries to the oracle for ss. Write ps(y)p_s(y) for the Born probability (2) of the outcome yy when the search measurement is performed on |ψks⟩⟨ψks||\psi_k^s\rangle\langle\psi_k^s|.

The Claim

Theorem 1. Let SS be a quantum system with a quantum search problem on NN items, |ψ⟩|\psi\rangle an initial pure state, U0,U1,…U_0, U_1, \dots unitaries of SS, MM a number of marked items with 1≤M≤N1 \le M \le N, and kk a number of queries. Suppose that for every set ss of exactly MM items the search measurement on |ψks⟩⟨ψks||\psi_k^s\rangle\langle\psi_k^s| returns an item of ss with probability at least one half, ∑y∈sps(y)≥12\sum_{y \in s} p_s(y) \ge \tfrac12. Then k≥12(N2M−1).k \;\ge\; \frac{1}{2} \left( \sqrt{\frac{N}{2M}} - 1 \right) .(5)✦

For large N/MN/M the bound grows as N/M/(22)\sqrt{N/M}/(2\sqrt{2}), which is the Ω(N/M)\Omega(\sqrt{N/M}) of the exercise.

What Is Checked

The claim is stated over the computational basis of a search problem and its search measurement, the oracles OsO_s of (3) for the sets ss of MM items, the states |ψks⟩|\psi_k^s\rangle of (4), and the Born probabilities (2) of the search outcomes on |ψks⟩⟨ψks||\psi_k^s\rangle\langle\psi_k^s|.

Of these constructions the library proves that OsO_s is unitary, because PsP_s is an orthogonal projector, Ps2=Ps=Ps†P_s^2 = P_s = P_s^\dagger. It proves that the projectors |bi⟩⟨bi||b_i\rangle\langle b_i| of an orthonormal basis satisfy the completeness relation (1), since each projector PP has P†P=PP^\dagger P = P and the projectors sum to the identity.
